Learning to be a global citizen
January 30, 2010 - 05:55 AM

Hey guys,
As you know the theme of the conference is how do we shift from learning to know to learning to be a global citizen.
So my question is:
1. What do you think is the best approach to make this shift?
2. How can we use technology to encourage people to learn to be global citizens?
Looking forward to your answers!
Shobana~

Joining different online forums and being a TIG member are one of the many things that a person could do to be a global citizen.. Like in the Philippines, a organization "Boto mo i-patrol mo"( my vote and my responsibility) was organized to protect the vote of Filipinos for the coming of May 2010 election. Hence, a organization for global citizen could also also built so that all the citizen of this world will be united fighting for one goal.. called PEACE!!

Hi Shobana,
here are what i think...
on shifting from learning to know to learning to be a global citizen.
1. What do you think is the best approach to make this shift?
"The key challenge for schools is to prepare students to become global citizens who understand the nature of global issues and take an active role in addressing them"
the unfolding event occur in one part of the world could impact to surrounding and world such as the Financial crisis.
to live together in an increasingly diverse and complex society and to reflect on and interpret fast-changing information.
we have to prepare the youth to know the broad perspective and global issues confronting us. this wil make them being the part of global citizen that they can be aware of. Awareness could turn to be an intiate to act and take part of tackling those issues.
thats why teachers should guide and shape the self-learning and curiousity of student on them.
2. How can we use technology to encourage people to learn to be global citizens?
From then on, there are many ways utilising technology to learn how to be the so-caleed global citizen
1. The vast information exchange
internet-being online- is getting crucial nowadays to know-how anything in everypart of life.
2. cross-cultural dialogue
we can do tele-conference, chatting, discssion forum to do dialogue among the global citizens
3. media campaign
pitures, videos, games are easily accesable to be made!

To make this shift, we need to be more involved in the global community. What I mean is that we should stop being indifferent to the issues that we are currently facing and we should start in the very societies that we are living in. We don’t have to start in large scales. Every journey starts with a small step. Technology could be used to link each and every global citizen in the planet. One good example is www.omegle.com. In this website, you get to chat with anonymous people around the world. You could make friends with different people and you could share your point of views. Personally, I have made friends with people from the United States and in Finland. We are still in contact and we get to share the issues in our respective countries. You guys should also try this website! It will be a very good experience and you will get to know other people from other countries.

Thanks for sharing guys. I personally think that technology is the best tool to aid the transition process between learning to know and learning to be a global citizen. It allows us to explore beyond our textbooks and to learn from people half way around the world.
TIG itself is a good example of a platform that aids this transition.
Well, hope to hear more of your ideas. Keep them coming.

1. What do you think is the best approach to make this shift?
to be an an active member of any groups whose main objective is to make a CHANGE and let PEACE prevail in this world is the best approach to make this shift.
2. How can we use technology to encourage people to learn to be global citizens?
With the help of technologies, we can communicate with other people from different sides of the world who are concern about global issues and be united on making solutions with these problems.

I totally agree with you! In order for us to be united, there should first be peace.

Hey, I guess besides broadening our perspectives, it gives us a clear line of action that can be taken to help others who are in need. When we are a global citizen, we are aware of our surroundings. But that alone is not enough. We need to do something to make a positive impact on the world around us. For example, all of us on this forum. Everyone here is global citizens who are actively engaged in "doing something", rite?

1. What do you think is the best approach to make this shift?
I think the best way to make this shift is stop being indifferent of the current issues and start caring. Let us eradicate indifference and ignorance so as to give way information concerning global issues. We should begin involving ourselves to these current global issues because we would soon be the next generation of leaders.
2. How can we use technology to encourage people to learn to be global citizens?
I totally agree with what shobana said. TIG is a great platform for people like us to learn from each other. And through this platform we could share our different perspectives concerning global issues.

Besides broadening our perspective and knowledge, I personally believe that being a global citizen would enable us to help people that are outside our community.
We are actually making a difference to the youth when we become global citizens. We become great examples to the youth and for other generations to come. It is not just one person benefiting but all of us.

1. What do you think is the best approach to make this shift?
Make your OWN resolution and commit to it.
Take your fullest responsibility to the action you desire to do, no matter it is peace or environment or politics related or not.
Coz when you're not keen on it anymore, nothing could end up a good thing

1. What do you think is the best approach to make this shift?
The best approach to make this shift is by using forums or discussion groups like this. By using forums, we can share our views, our perspective to the people around the globe. Cultural understanding is one of many approaches that can be applied also. Because when we understands cultural background of other people, we start to respect other people. And I believe respecting each other is the very core of becoming global citizens.
2. How can we use technology to encourage people to learn to be global citizens?
I think technology play a big role on encouraging people to be global citizens. Using social networking sites (e.g twitter, facebook, myspace, etc) people nowadays can be more and more open to the idea of being a global citizens. Internet as one of many products of technology has making our world more and more border-less. By using this kind of media, we can encourage people to become global citizens.

1. What do you think is the best approach to make this shift?
Well as said by many, we make this shift by joining groups and forums such as these. There have been numerous symposiums and the like about programs regarding globalization. Personally, I think they are very engaging! I really believe in open communication between different countries and cultures. We should be open to new ideas for they will help us progress. Youth groups, exchange-student programs, and even through church activities (Yes, its possible!) is where we should actively participate!
2. How can we use technology to encourage people to learn to be global citizens?
Online forums and organizations are great spots to encourage others. I know in this thread this answer is cliche'd...but really it is! It's fun too! We have interactive communication with people around Asia!

Hmmm...I'm not sure that this is gonna help but...hehe...
Anyway, perhaps, another benefit of globalization is, actually, the benefit of having the benefit of broadening your perspective and knowledge...do you guys understand?...Haha...Probably not. But anyway, what I meant is the application we can get from our broadened perspective and knowledge. We can share these ideas and concepts we learned to others and incorporate the really good ones into our lifestyle! We can have good interaction with other nationalities. We can make ourselves models of change and progress for other people - for our country. We, the youths, are forerunners of the future, of progress, of change...so we must give globalization chance.
