Many places on this earth still do not have access to the internet. In fact, many places have radio as thier main source of mass media (or media at all). How do we use IT's to connect to those who can only access radio? How do we bring universal access to all?

Your question reminds me of a joke. What's the state flower of West Virginia? The satelite dish! That joke works for all rural states. I know sat. dishes are susceptible to weather but are better than nothing to people out in the sticks.

Hi Brian,

I, and others, have been working on this problem for many years! We have some of the answers but getting the 'powers that be' to listen is far from easy!

If you click on www.biodesign.org.uk you will get an idea what this is about.

Even better email biodes@tiscali.co.uk and we can start a proper discussion.

Graham

P.S. Its pleasant to find one of those rare people who recognise there is a problem!

Yes this is to quote what Brian has said alot of people in rural areas do not know what Internet is, not to talk of the access.
This could been seen in some developing countries like Nigeria .the question is that how do we reach out to these people. In our past project on ICT awareness in a particular sub urban region,in Imo state NIgeria,we discovered that that secondary school students were excited and looked at the computer as if,it was an angel television from heaven isnt this amazing?
This showed that youths are willing but no resources to reach out to them.

Alot are involved in this problem ...............
so how do we go about this??

Fine Question!

Brian, Fine Question, This is one the focal aims
of WSIS WG - Sri Lanka, we have been using diverse
methods and at the moment we plan to have IT centers per each electoral province in all districts in Sri Lanka. The IMF had granted money to initialize this idea
but Sri Lanka would be requiring more efforts as we go on.

The fact we are concentrating is to save money to which would be spent for a fresh infrastructure with the help of
existing resources. Rural connectivity is not easy, as it seems from the surface and I am sure graham too would agree with me.

it is quite true that a lot of youths based in the rural areas do not have access to ICT facilities. i also am on a national youth service corp programme in Nigeria and have been posted to a rural area in the eastern part of the nation in Imo state. a lot of youths in this place have not seen a computer not to talk of having access to internet facilities. it is quite discouraging but i think we should continue to utilise all opportunities we have to urge government and ngos to do more for the people in these areas.

first questions ...
April 2, 2004 - 10:53 AM

- what do the people in the rural areas expect to benefit from IT?
- are the expectations the same in the north and in the south, east and west?
- what is the special need of the rural people in contrast to people in the cities?
- which pictures of rural/urban areas are there?

somebody here got prove of some best practice/case studies?

best,
laurent
