Should parents have the choice of choosing their child's gender?

I encountered a debate with this topic and it got me thinking, should parents have the choice of choosing what gender their child should be? On one hand you have the welfare of the child to think of, if a traditional boy-crazy family gets a girl instead of the favoured male child, there is the risk of female infanticide, so protect the girl from being born and killed almost immediately after, perhaps people should just have the choice of choosing what gender they want. And, since the majority of the world is moving away from biasedness towards any particular sex, there isn't much fear of getting a world population that has too many boys or too many girls. There are couples with 3 boys who want to try again for a girl but, if it turns out to be a boy again, can't afford to try once more after that, so should the dilemma be solved for them by ensuring that their next child will definately be a girl?
On the other hand, we still have traditionalist countries like China (which makes up a large sum of the world's population) who would probably want boys and only boys, skewing the ratio of boys to girls. Plus there is the problem of ethics, a baby is not a commodity, picking which gender you want shouldn't be like choosing whether you want a dress to be red or blue. A child should be loved no matter if they are male or female, what message are we sending to society at large if couples are allowed to choose the sex of their baby? And, if most of the world doesn't care if their baby is a boy or a girl, does it matter whether they get to choose?
So that's both sides of the case as bet as I can present them. What are your views and can it be backed by evidence and proof (eg. stats, facts etc.)?

I don't see why parents should concern themselves with what the gender of their unborn child should be.Every child whether boy or girl has a right to be loved. My being a girl notwithstanding,i bet that if p0arents are gtiven a right to choose what gender their child will be,girls will surely go to extition.

no way! i mean look at china, where they often kill baby girls and now have way to many guys! this destabilises a countries population! and in some countries there are way more women than men! so i don't think they should choose their childs gender!
