school lunches

Hey, this is Ema again, and I got a good subjuct for u guys to talk about---school lunches. At my school, every day we have pizza and fries (but I dont buy lunch)-- and I was shocked to hear from my teacher that eating pizza and fries thru out middle school could kill a person at the age of 30. Shouldn't our lunches be a little more healthier than that? I mean, nearly every one at my school is in danger of dieing at a young age because of this. THAT'S A BIG PROBLEM!!

You're right about the school lunch thing. Also a big problem is schools that put in Coke machines for students just because Coke (and other soda companies) give them some money for the school. I ate badly when I was in public school, except at breakfast! You actually could eat cereal and fruit with milk for breakfast. Too bad your choices for lunch were the good old pizza (which I actually loved, but I know now it's too greasy for kids to eat all the time), nasty dried-up burgers mostly without cheese, maccaroni and cheese that had congealed into a solid mass and maybe some nasty fish sticks that look like they were surplussed from 1979. I think that most schools skimp on food because of funding but that's no excuse. I know it is very easy for schools to order their cafeteria food from large companies that offer few choices.
Salads are very cheap! Just not too much Ranch dressing...
A side story: When I was in middle school a Jamaican vendor would come to my school on the base in GTMO Bay, Cuba and he had the usual...pizza, burgers and fries. But he also had Jamaican beef pies! Wow those were good.
What I am eating now: Just as an example to you younger folks I am eating lunch at work right now and am munching on pita bread with spicy hummus. yummy.

Hehe... We care :-)
I don't know if you saw this a few years ago, but the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) in the US launched a campaign calling high-fat, high-cholesterol school lunches “weapons of mass destruction.” They were very concerned that in 2001, the government’s two biggest expenditures for the National School Lunch Program were $179 million for cheese and another $170 million for beef. This was seen as a way of supporting cattle producers and dairy farmers, who are very powerful lobbyists in Washington, DC - NOT becuase those foods are healthy for kids.
PCRM launched a new website at the time (http://www.healthyschoollunches.org/) to help young people and their parents get information on what they can do to change the situation.
