Considering Madrid...

Given the furore over Spain's promise to withdrawal troops from Iraq, with the U.S condemning the Socialists supposed 'appeasement' of terrorism, and with the Socialists pointing fingers towards the U.S for 'fuelling the fires of hatred,' I have written the following as a response.

Mike:
I enjoyed reading your article on the vibewire site. I wanted to post a response sooner, but have not been able to, due to time constraints.
I am not that familiar with the current political scene in Australia. My focus has been here at home in the U.S., with one of the most important elections in the history of this country at hand. Those of us who did not vote for Bush in 2000 have been very concerned over the unilateralism and "foreign policy" decisions that have alienated many of our friends abroad. On the other hand, as you so well pointed out in your article, everyone needs to be concerned about "human tragedy" no matter where it is or who is involved, whether it is a desperate boat-people situation or people being murdered under a despotic regime. Remedial actions are best accomplished through a majority coalition of UN members. (otherwise why have the UN?)
When injustices and the conditions that breed them around the world decrease, terrorism will decrease. Every person on this Planet has the Right to exist for his or her own sake in his or her personal life, without outside control-mongering, domination or interference from the state or anyone else. As I have said before, both the Israelis and the Palestinians have the Right to exist in peace and security in their own independent homelands, under their own national flags. This is the only solution to this political issue, and it must be accomplished as soon as possible. It should have been done years ago.
Radical fundamentalism (of any persuasion) is the BANE of the Planet.
Unfortunately, with regards to your comment about siding "with the U.S. in combating fundamentalism", one discovers that the "conservative" "Religious Right" supporters of Bush are themselves radical fundamentalist religionists. They urged support of Bush - they have already done well in fleecing the flock, but they want more, (promotion of their "self-interest" and now they expect Bush to come through, after they "delivered the votes" of the votaries. Witness this abject bigotry from the pen of Robertson: "If anybody understood what Hindus really believe, there would be no doubt that they have no business administering government policies in a country that favors freedom and equality. ... Can you imagine having the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as defense minister, or Mahatma Gandhi as minister of health, education, and welfare? The Hindu and Buddhist idea of karma and the Muslim idea of kismet, or fate condemn the poor and the disabled to their suffering. ... It's the will of Allah. These beliefs are nothing but abject fatalism, and they would devastate the social gains this nation has made if they were ever put into practice." [Pat Robertson "The New World Order," p 219]. Is it surprising, in light of the above statement by a "conservative" religious "leader" that in "conservative" Australia, [to quote your article] "Australian talkback radio and the mainstream press" were "awash with racist, intolerant, and absurd claims about Muslims, Arabs, and other minorities."? We had the same thing over here. How about this venom from Jerry Falwell on Robertson's 9/13/01 700 Club broadcast? "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'" (referring to 9/11) In other words, they want a theocracy, with themselves in positions of power and control, dictating down to the last detail to the populace, what decisions they will make in their personal lives. We see similar situations under the Taliban, MMA, etc. where women have been forbidden to practice their chosen professions (or worse yet not allowed to be educated in science, ect.), and forced to wear clothing they do not wish to wear. Skilled musicians have been prohibited from playing and enjoying the beloved traditional music of their own Cultural Heritage. Craftsmen have been denied work, simply because they were of a different sect than the one in power.
Your statement: "It is left to be seen if it aggressively pursues the sole cause of fundamentalism; ignorance." hits the mark. They probably won't. Fundamentalists of these persuasions have been injecting religion into political conflicts and using it as an excuse to kill, for over 1,000 years. The Core Inner Esoteric Wisdom that exists in every ancient Religion is de-emphasized (or in many cases forgotten or omitted, and thus the votaries are ignorant of it) and external sectarian dogma is promoted to prime importance by the self-seeking, control-mongering prelates. One look at history will tell you what happens when the religionist is in influence/power in government..... ......it's called the dark ages....
