animal cruelty

Hey everybody, ema here, and I wanna talk about something new. I am a vegetarian with a very important question--what really goes on in those farms? Certain people I know have told me cruel things about animals raised for meat. Like that they are skinned alive and sometimes even beaten-- and how come so little people are concerned about this? How can we help stop it---especially at such a young age as mine (I'm only 13)? Somebody PLEASE reply!!

Teach other people of living on a non-violent way. And teach your kids (when having) about non-violent living. And good luck. This is not an easy task.

The best way I see to help is just to keep educating people of the hazzards of eating meat. I tried being a vegetarian for about 6 months a long time ago and I fould that it was cheaper for me to eat meat because it was easier to get...I could barely boil water back then. These days I do eat meat but I don't buy meat very often at the grocery store anymore. I enjoy the occasional cheesburger and sub sandwich but eat mostly non-meat food at home like pita-bread pizza, cereal for breakfast, fresh fruits and veggies and rice pudding and assorted goodies for snacking. I do have a weakness for fried bbq pork skins but I try to avoid them!
My culture in the southern US is very meat-centric. Oh forgot to mention my weakness for Carolina BBQ (which I have mentioned in another post). It would take a lot of time for my people to move away from meat consumption.
I would love to have a "Replicator" like in Star Trek that would make meals out of thin air. No dead critters there!

Also look up info on Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle." Hmm...now that I've found a site that has it for free maybe I'll actually read the whole thing...

In my experience, there is no such thing as coincidence. Apparently I was meant to help you and am glad I did!

Hello! Emma, well said, the human race at present lacks the sensitivity to understand the suffering of other living beings.
All tremble at the rod. All fear death. Comparing others with oneself, one should neither strike nor cause to strike.
Whoever tries to seek happiness through hurting others, cannot find happiness. - Dhammapada

Emma, whenever I raise this point about animal killing/ animal sacrifices/meat eating, an argument people would raise is about plants, But people who had done botany can discern the botanical truth in it. But still I would like to get your views in it, killing a plant and killing an animal, is it the same ?
Cheers,
Udara

I agree. We don't kill most plants. Take fruits for example. They fall from trees for us to eat! A banana tree "lives" forever and keeps on producing fruit. When you kill an animal to eat it, it's gone. That's why we have more and more endangered species all the time. Humantiy is the ultimate breaker of natural balance.
