Unique marine environment at risk
March 24, 2004 - 04:27 AM

Oil has already devastated so many environments, we all know about the Prestige oil spill off the coast of Spain last year which caused the death of over 300,000 birds.

Now the Baltic Sea, one of the world's most extraordinary seas and one of the most threatened, needs protection against devastating oil disasters.

Oil spills are a real and present threat to this fragile marine environment, home to grey seals, Baltic ringed seals and harbour porpoises.

Since 1980 the Baltic Sea has suffered a major shipping accident nearly every year which resulted in an oil spill larger than 100 tonnes.

Hope you can spare a few minutes to help safeguard the Baltic Sea. Find out how;

hey Sar, this makes me both mad and sad at the same time. Dont people care that theyre killing living creatures? Apparantly not, if so many animals are dieing each year.

Unfortunately big business oil interests are often put ahead of the environment.

The Baltic Sea really needs protection, but Russia's disregard for the environment and its desire to cheaply transport its oil, means it's fighting against protection efforts.

We need to fight to save this special place!

WE WON!

The Baltic Sea has finally been given the protection it desperately deserves!!

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has decided (on Friday April 2nd) to designate the Baltic Sea as a "Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA)"

This is a great victory!

Designating PSSAs requires ships to take special care when navigating through such areas, and enables coastal states and the IMO to agree on best protective measures.

This should stop oil disasters in this beautiful place, protecting its spectacular wildlife.

Thanks to those of you who supported this campaign.
