Hey People,

this coming monday I (and 9 other Torontonians I believe) will be talking with senior officials of Finance Canada about the future of Canada's Economy.

If any tiggers out there are passionate about this subject and have specific questions/comments you would like me to address at the event, post away and I'll do my best to be the messenger!

During the discussion, they hope to cover some broad policy topics such as:

* What does the “new knowledge-based economy” mean?

* Is there a trade-off between economic policy and social policy?

* How do you create brand recognition for Canada?

* How do you carve out a “Canadian advantage” in this new, highly integrated, highly mobile world, particularly in North America? Have the events of last September 11th changed the factors contributing to success?

I'll update soon wink

Firstly, as my location suggests - i dont know much about whats happening in Canada - how things are perceived, but i do know one thing - Toronto is beautiful in the winter.

In terms of 'knowledge based economy' it seems fairly evident that my comments would have as much relevance as someone living in Canada.
(i prefer to call myself canadian, rather than australian remember)

The drive by a majority of todays producers to be powered by intellectual advancements as per technological advances (and the theories being developed by social engineers, economic analysts, and the like) have led a majority of Western economies to rely most heavily on the minority of the labour force. The intellectuals.

The largest problem with this surge for the *smart cookies* has meant older, more traditional workers are finding it harder to get employed in jobs sufficient to support their standard of living, as well as those jobs that make them feel fulfilled as a person.

The question over the solution remains - a long term strategy to educate more *Canadians* with the ability to cope with todays, and tommorows demands in the workforce - or to apply a short-term solution in equipping the traditional workforces with the right skills needed to be employed in tommorows economic environment.

-----------------------------------------

There is always a tradeoff between economics and social policy. Often where creators of the 'plans' have had to compromise in the sense of what their policies are set to achieve leads to a failure of the plans to achieve their core aims.

To support the country economically speaking, and to provide foundation for a strong nation.

Discussion on the Economy

Thank you for your comment on my page. My interview did not cover the range of questions which you have been presented with. Nevertheless, I think that I could reflect on the couple of them!

On the knowledge-based economy, I have to say that when I spoke with Paul Martin (off the record) he told me that the key is with the education of young people. As the new wave of IT enters the political and economic spectrum, it is up to the youth to pick up the education necessary for understanding the challenges ahead. Education is the answer to this...

There certainly is a trade-off between economic and social policy. Not all economic decisions made by governments - be it interest rates or cutting government spending - are going to play in favour of social policy. But what is possible to do is to lessen the negative effects of such policies.

As for branding Canada, I have to say that we are one of the most unique countries in the world in terms of an overall positive image. We have to be careful not become too much like the Americans or Europeans. the U.S. and Europe, represent two ends of a spectrum. Canada is the middle ground in this spectrum, and we should remain there. Preservng the positive image of Canada is, therefore, a necessity!

I hope these help, if not, I offer my apologies!!

Good luck on you meeting, and please let me know how it went...

Huss

p.s. Congrats on the 'A' smile
