[Poll] I think this is pretty scary: what about you?
April 16, 2001 - 08:36 AM

The following is an email I got from a friend in Scotland... We both do a lot of work with encryption and security. Particularly writing articles and software to advocate the concept of strong public encryption.

[ This was actually sent to me at the beginning of the year, but I never bother checking my uni mail big grin
Thought I'd post it to disspel the myth that the UK has anything even approaching fair privacy laws. ]

Subject: Permitted Interception of Communications

Dear Student,

The University is required by law to bring to the attention of all staff and students the following notice.

Notice: Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 & Lawful Business Practice Regulations

As required by UK legislation, the Academic Services Group draws to the attention of all users of the University's Data and Telephones Networks the fact that their communications may be intercepted as permitted by legislation.

The legislation allows the University to intercept without consent for purposes such as recording evidence of transactions, ensuring regulatory compliance, detecting crime or unauthorised use, and ensuring the operation of their telecoms systems. The University does not need to gain consent before intercepting for these purposes although we need to inform staff and students that interceptions may take place.

What's really scary is that under the RIP act, you can be imprisoned for (I believe) up to two years if they even *suspect* you and you fail to hand over your private key or forget your passphrase. (To decrypt your files)

I think you would have to be doing something pretty seriously wrong in order for it to get to this level.
The average person has no clue what this even means.

True..but..

I agree, but this is something that affects the average person as much as the social deviant.

Even if you do just get pictures of kittens wearing party hats in your email, is it right to stand by as large institutions make any and all of your business their business?

If a nice woman from the government knocked on your door and asked if she could peruse your family photo albums, as part of a routine check for any criminal activity, would you agree? I doubt that, despite a lack of incriminating photos, anyone would be forthcoming in a situation like that.

My daily flow of jokes and TakingITGlobal emails are nobody's business but my own.

I agree and think that it is really scary to think that the government would pay someone to read your e-mail.
I think that it would be a really tedious task. Do you think that they read everyone's or just potential
Hi-Jackers, I mean expert Hackers.

well...

People suspected of misconduct are closely monitored by paid individuals. Emails and other transmissions that are not suspected of such, are passed through a software filter that looks for keywords such as "assassinate" "microsoft" "George Bush" and then flags those transmissions as ones requiring further investigation.

Odds are, if I send my friend an email saying something to the effect of:

***
Hey Bob, just got that new microsoft game. You know, the one where you have to save the president from being assassinated?
Speaking of Presidents...can you believe how narrowly Bush won over Gore?
See you at work tomorrow...
Jim..
***

I can fully expect that this email will be read by some sort of interested party... I can also be assured that future emails will be monitored just to make sure that I don't have a US Pres fascination.

I'd also bet anyone $50 that someone in the Govt. will scrutinize this news post.

'National Security' is fine, but to what ends?

Well.

Actually Aforster, Id hope the U.S government doesnt pay any attention to this post.

TakingITGlobal is Canadian. This is way out of their jurisdiction. Well, its not within their borders anyway.

Unless the servers for the boards are in the states?
