Ring the Peace Bell on Spring Day
March 13, 2004 - 12:02 PM

Spring Day in Europe gives schools the opportunity to debate and celebrate the enlargement of the EU. The future of an enlarged Europe belongs to its youth, and with this in mind, Spring Day in Europe reaches out to teachers and pupils across the continent.
Every school in Europe is invited to take part in Spring Day in Europe 2004, an event where schools hold their own 'Spring Day' on Tuesday, 23 March 2004 or around that date.
Between now and Spring Day, schools can get ready in a number of ways. The project website (http://futurum2004.eun.org) provides resources and activities for classes to work on independently or in partnership with other classes around Europe. By working with our neighbours, we can learn more about each other and exchange views on our future.

This year Spring Day has a special focus on Peace and is officially associated to the United Nations Peace Bell ceremony. Every year at the exact time of the equinox, major United Nations officials gather around the United Nations Peace Bell and reflect on peace in the world.
The way Spring Day schools that want to take part in the peace Bell ceremony should do it is as follows:

On March 23, at 10 am, ring a symbolic bell three times (this can be a bell made or brought by the students, the school bell or the recording that we will provide of the real United Nations bell). Then stay silent for one minute to reflect on how peace can be the main value of enlarged Europe and how enlarged Europe can contribute to bring peace to the rest of the world. This could be followed by a discussion or you can simply get on with.

Through this particular event we aim to make Europe and the world hear that young Europeans want to live and work in a peaceful world, travel where they want and discover other cultures in peace and respect, understanding and solidarity.
