Is development a myth?
March 12, 2004 - 04:46 AM

Do you think 'Development' is a myth . . . we were thinking about it today and came to the conclusion that everyone has a different idea of what development is and what it means and what ends it is trying to acheive. Because of this, there is no universal method for one universal 'Development' and therefore 'Development', as a universal process that works everywhere, is a myth . . . but 'Development' as a multi-faceted concept that is both a process and an ideal which has to be adjusted to every culture, community and country is not a myth. Are you confused yet? Any thoughts?

Development isn't a myth... terming it so is like underming all kinds of Human endeavour. However... it is true that there cannot be a single universal solution for development as people around the world are essentially different. Nevertheless with new age technologies such as the Internet, communication across the planet has become a lot easier. Now... its only a matter of time that the concept of a "Global Village" becomes a ground reality and when that happens may be it would be wise to think of "One Universal Concept for Development"

DEVELOPMENT-is multifaceted could mean absoluelty anything that is or perceived to have undergone change that is beneficial to part or all of the receipients direct and indirect.

SUSATAINABLE-there is the universal definition of not compromising the existing and future generations ability to develop

however to me development in theory is not the same in practice

this is the reason why for many it seems somewhat of a phalacy that is unattainable. it is because the existing concept of development has been going through western based metamorphosis, development after the world wars and development during the Cold war have been gradually shifting. I will not turn this into history lesson but I am one person who believes development as we know it today is like a car in a oneway highway called globalisation, where the true values of sustainable developement must allow for reverse like any car is designed to have, but those with power claim and act to the effect that this cannot be "development" does Indigenous Knowledge Systems ring any bells? well it should.

Some opinionist view that if Africa was not colonised it would have been a global power, not in the context of economic or nuclear supremacy but in the context of cultural wealth and inner peace of mind and love, you know the untarnished values that matter most to a human being
