How to respond/react to racism?
March 7, 2004 - 01:40 AM

I've always known that racism is there, but for the first time I've encountered it in person. My husband is black and I'm white, we live in Canada and I've always been very happy with the fact that it never seemed like a big issue where we live. A friend and I were outside talking about work and so forth when a guy came up to us and started talking and then started saying how he just saw a white women with a black baby and how that disgusted him. The guy didn't know us or the fact that my husband is black or the children that we are trying to have will be black as well. I started to get quite upset and interupted the guy but he went on to say that black people are uneducated and just when he was about to go on that line of topic I said I think that you need to become educated and unfortunately I let my temper erupt and called him a racist pig and walked away. I know that I didn't handle the situation well but I don't know how I should have reacted. I'm just so angry at the moment...and I can't believe that people actually believe this crap.

Hey there,

I think that the situation you encountered is really unfortunate. BUT, do not let the ignorance and lack of understanding of one person (or several people) hurt you. Instead, realize that you have the gift of seeing the true beauty of life and that gift transcends all racism, hurt and discrimination. Sometimes when people do/say hurtful things I feel really upset too but instead I try to send them positive energy so that they too can see the light and love in life and move beyond their boundedness which is constricting their ability to see and appreciate life and difference.

Thank you for your response, it's nice to hear from someone else and it helped venting my anger about the situation. I hope that some day I will be able to respond in a more positive way as you do.

I've just read this - what a terrible thing to happen.
I've seen racism where I live too.
One time I was out with some friends of mine (one of whom is black) and these two guys came up to us and started talking to me - trying to get me to go to some gig they were doing. They gave flyers to all of us apart from my black friend, it wasn't just forgetting to give him one - it was making a point of not giving him one. I was really annoyed so i decided to make a point. I asked him why he'd not given my friend a flyer. He said "I should hang with my own kind." We'd gone for a drink to celebrate another friends birthday - so i was running on dutch courage,
I said,
"I do, my 'kind' aren't scum. That why I'm not coming to this." and screwed the flyer up and droped it.

The two walked away - giving us dirty looks and muttering things - we went home watching out backs.
Now I think about it my method was really stupid (lucky for me I'm build like a brick wall and had a gang of friends behind me) but i think the idea was right.
We need to pull these people up about things like this. Make a point to them that it's not accptable.

My suggestion is to just forget about him. That is NOT the overwhelming opinion of Canadians, it is infact an "unCanadian" comment. Nothing that you say is going to change his mind, he sees the facts just as well as you or I, yet chooses to ignore it. He already has the full weight of Canadian culture telling him he's wrong, however if he's not willing to change, so be it. Canada was built on tolerance and freedom of thought and expression as well, you really can't have one without the others.

Maybe if he's so "educated" he'll attempt to write an artical about his views and get nailed under Canada's anti-hate laws.

Just start by yourself.

U know the proverb:

IF YOU WANT TO START A REVOLUTION, START IT WITH YOURSELF!

well said,
we've got a growing problem in England with the BNP - British Nazi Party, or possible British National Party
same thing.

They have stupid slogans like 'Britain for the British' - England is an island which has been ivaded and settled for the whole of it's history -how far back to they want to take this - Angles, Celts, Norsemen.
It's pointless hatred - multicultural societies have so much to offer evereyone living in them.

Racism about skin colour

i think that if someone calles you a racist word you should react to it because if you don't show people that you would not like to be called recist words they will stop and not take advantage of you.
People should just be conforable about the fact that a black person and a white person are together.

My high school is in a downtown area and we have off campus lunch. every day we walk through the park and see "interesting people". people doing drugs, homeless people asking for money, but one day as we walked through someone held out a flyer to my friends and me and said "preserve white power!" We ignored him and walk off astonished at what we had just experienced. I had never heard anyone say this before to me, i thought the KKK was dead in Colorado but apparently not. These are the kind of people that set a bad example for every white person. We are all people living in the same community, to supress and humiliate people of other races is only hurting ourselves.
