I dont have a specific opinion about homeless people. But it is not a negative one.

They are the negative side of economic boom.

People, which have been sidelined by money flow.

to solve their problems is to create jobs (any way we can).

And cheaper housing.

And more open society, which would embrace more ways os making money, thus making more chances for economic boom.

The Homeless.

Nothing really hurts as much as seeing someone sleeping in open air with no place to go. Quite a number of factors can contribute to homelessness.

> poor planning by most governments.
> lack of employment.
> HIV / AIDS: a case where most kidsw are thrown into the streets and have no one to take care of them hence they result to the streets.
> Lack of concern by leaders and the greediness they have.

I believe if afew things concerning what i have stated above can be changed then we are going to make a difference.

Aluta Continua.

Homelessness has recently become a subject very near and dear to my heart. I have always believed that there is no reason or excuse, whatsoever, in the developed nations especially, to have any of our citizens living on the streets.

I live in Canada, and almost everywhere in this country there is winter, and winter here means below freezing temperatures, and without adequate shelter, that can mean death.

I am appalled at the lack of concern that our government has regarding these unfortunate individuals. I also realize that a very few of them 'choose' to live on the streets, but I also have to wonder how long and how hard they tried, and failed, to find some other remedy, only to run up against brick walls of red tape and uncaring policy makers.

Many of these unfortunates have other issues that affect their ability to work, have meaningful relationships, and even to simply take care of themselves. Mental and/or physical illness, addictions, or even reaching a breaking point where they simply cannot cope with daily life anymore can all be factors that contribute to this problem.

And yet, no matter what other issues are involved, these people are treated like all the rest... appointments are made, and broken, because they have nowhere to plug an alarm clock into, even if they had one. Employers turn them away when their cleanliness is less than perfect because they have nowhere to have a shower or shave, and no way to get a haircut, or decent clothing.

I think that we are sadly remiss in addressing this issue. I also believe that we would all benefit greatly if there was a little more help extended to help these people get themselves on their own two feet. Yes, it may cost tax payers a little more in the short term, but in the long run the financial benefits of helping some of them become useful and productive tax-paying citizens would soon wipe out the meagre amount of extra help needed to allow them to achieve a stable lifestyle. And the financial benefits from reducing the welfare roles would no doubt far exceed the ongoing costs incurred to help them.

As I said at the outset of this response, this subject has recently become one that is very close to my heart. I have a 21 year old son who is now living on the streets. Having three younger children at home, and existing on a government disability pension of $605.00/month, I did all I could for him, which was to bring him back home so that he would at least have a roof over his head and food in his stomach... Unfortunately, owing to a yet undiagnosed condition that leaves him prone to uncontrollable rages and anti-social behavior, I had to make a choice - a heart-breaking choice between him and my other children... And to make things worse, having reached the age of majority, short of going to court and having him declared incompetent, my hands are tied. He is paranoid of any authority figures, and delusional, and he refuses to even meet with any of the service agencies that MIGHT be able to help him.

Yes, my heart bleeds for these people. Yes, our governments must take affirmative steps to take care of these people. And yes, if any of us can, even in whatever small ways, do anything to help this situation, we MUST take action to do what we can. I do, even though I have very little to give. And every time I do, I am rewarded a hundred fold for my actions, because it makes ME feel better about myself.

Collectively, as a world community, we must take action to address homelessness. These unfortunates are not to be feared, they should be helped. Desperation may make them do things that are wrong, but if YOU had been several days without food, I wonder what lengths YOU might go to to get something to eat?

I look forward to hearing more on this subject.

SS

Homelessness is a big concern of mine, I mean, I feel guilty to live in such a good house as mine, and then see them with barely nothing at all. I think that the government should be giving more to the homeless because people LIVES are much more important than rebuilding roads or improving schools. I would like to see our government helping the worst-off first, and then maybe they can improve other things.

Nelson, you might want to check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty , and other Wikipedia articles. I always use that, and it's great for research projects of all types.

On the subject of homelessness, I personally don't have enough knowledge of the subject to have a definite view. It seems that with some effort, about half the people that are on the streets today could start a simple job. But I live in Las Cruces, New Mexico- it's not a crowded city, like the ones really plagued by homelessness are.
