Indigenous Peoples and Sustainable Livelihoods
February 24, 2004 - 03:15 AM

Many indigneous communities are struggling with the issue of how to provide sustainable livelihoods for their people. Given their traditional relationship to the land, this often converts into heated debates and discussion around the sustainable use of natural resources.... who gets to control them and how.

One of the most controversial areas has been that of mining on lands claimed by indigenous peoples. Last year, IISD helped to facilitate The Tahltan Mining Symposium in
Dease Lake, British Columbia to discuss how to apply principles of sustainable development to mining on indigenous lands. The resulting report, "Out of Respect" was finally published a few weeks ago in partnership with the Tahltan First Nation.

We're hoping other indigenous groups find it useful in bringing the mining corporations to the table.

Thanks Terry!

This is great information especially knowing that my band (Lubicon Lake) has been battling a court case for the past 60 years concerning oil exploitation on reserve land which has come to no avail. We still don't have running water on the reserve partly due to this land claim / resource dispute.

Is it okay if I put up the link?

Hi Melina,

Definitely feel free to post a link... the best page to link to might be http://www.iisd.org/natres/mining/tahltan.asp, since it gives the link to the report, but also to the rest of IISD's work on sustainable mining.

You might also be interested in some of the work on environment, livelihoods and conflict that my friend Jason Switzer has been working on (http://www.iisd.org/natres/security/nrls.asp). He's originally from Alberta, but is now working in our Geneva office.
