A NEW PLACE FOR NEW IDEAS
When over 250 delegates from the Commonwealth of Nations converged at the Creating Common Wealth Youth Enterprise Development Forum last November in Queensland, the objective was simple - exchange ideas and knowledge across cultures and promote social and commercial entrepreneurship
as a means to tackling some of the problems faced in the Commonwealth.
Each Commonwealth region was then required to develop a country action plan to keep the Forum’s message alive.
Enter The Twin Waters Group (TWG) - an informal network of delegates and interested parties with a shared desire to challenge existing norms and develop fresh thinking on issues relating to social justice, globalisation and sustainable development.
Designed as an international collective of youth opinion and experience, TWG was created by delegates of the Forum in an effort to progress business and social ideas and opportunities, and continue the shared sense of global purpose and values developed at the Forum.
“I not only learnt from the experiences of fellow Australians, but amazing social, environmental and business entrepreneurs from countries as diverse as India, Africa, and Jamaica,” said Karen Miles, Australian delegate and Director of Youth 2 Youth who ran some of the workshops at the event. “Any opportunity to continue those international links would be so welcome.”
The TWG was created to harness and enrich the views, experiences and shared challenges of the Forum and provide a platform for ongoing discussion.
“The Forum provided a real mix of skills and perspective. The passion of the delegates to bring about social change really struck me and that’s what inspired the TWG” said lead UK delegate and TWG co-founder, Simon Watson.
“Through The Twin Waters Group website, we aim to give a voice to emerging generations and provide an opportunity for free expression and discussion on a range of issues,” adds TWG creator and Forum delegate, Damien Moriarty. “Our focus on issues of poverty, social justice, development and governance is driven by the themes expressed by the group members.”
The www.twinwatersgroup.com website acts not only as a discussion forum but contains essays and articles by group members on a range of current topics, from the creation of a Youth Enterprise Development Fund to the role of the International Criminal Court.
You may be left wondering, why the name ‘The Twin Waters’? In memory of the tropical Twin Waters Resort that hosted the Forum - of course. But perhaps also a nod to the poolside activities that flowed from each day’s run of workshops. Get a group of switched on young people together and you’ve got a potent mix of energy, creativity, and fun.
