ghandi ...

I can't say i knew him, none of us can. I think it's very easy for us to sit here and analyse the situation from the comfort of our homes. The fact is we only have a vague idea of what the people of India must have gone through. Text books and films can never accurately portray the emotions felt by the people at that period in time. To say they suffered is a gross understatement that trivialises the torment that they endured.

But then I don't think that war is the answer .. how can it? look at africa? but then hoping that a peaceful protest will work may also be a bit naive. I can see that here, at home, with the political situation. Maybe when it comes to change, the only way you can topple an oppressor is to use the same tactics he used to get into power.. if that's the case.. when will it all end?

Ghandi's idea's were and still are very noble but i beileve that they can only work when dealing with civilised people who have the ability for basic human compassion.

One interesting fact about Gandhi is that he was a stretcher-bearer during the Boer War in South Africa. He often recovered the wounded during combat conditions. For his bravery under fire, he was decorated by the British military.

Just a reminder that he actually saw (though never fought) serious combat as a younger man.

There's an extent to everything.

When there is a problem, our first instinct is to solve it, and to abolish its existence. Sometimes we think the answer lies in holding a gun, and sometimes in peaceful protest. But chancese are, reaching for a gun may seem like the quick and easy solution. You are right, that isn't the answer, and that isn't the way that people like Gandhi felt disputes should be settled. However, it seems all of us as humans try to express our opinions, and the person with the loudest voice dominates. Generally, that loud voice is expressed with the sound of a gun shot, and another innocent life taken. Maybe this is the way we should realize that one big voice isn't as useful as a large group of small voices joined together. Finding the solution doesn't always mean it will be the easiest way...it's something all of us must learn as one race.

Well, somebody outta tell George W. Bush to watch out for that one. See, small conflagorations of extremist believers in faith absolutely ADORE what that statement by Ghandhi implies, that so long as their faith is true and unquenchable, their strength, though limited in numbers their faith is as strong; if not stronger, than Ghandhi and his followers could have ever hoped they would be to their own cause.

Thats very long sentence, and a long winded one at that. But what im really trying to get at is that the pluralist society in which many of the worlds wealthiest, and healthiest people live in, is at the mercy of those with an 'unquenchable faith in their mission.'

Now, do these people deserved to be 'quenched' with the blast of a gun?

Would destroying these jihad warriors by using the very violence they use to wage their own version of war achieve anything?

Pacifism wouldnt have stopped a World War, but can it stop one in which ideas are the real bombs and hate the fuel for the fire?

I dont know. Do you?

I would offer that Al-Qaida did not learn one caution from Gandhi. He often spoke of how the use of violence and terrorism usually inflame the will of a society. Britain during the Blitz became more dedicated to fighting Hitler rather than being demoralized. Al-Quaida's use of violence will in the end bring them more violence, not success.

Kites at Herat - Photographs by Luke Powell
June 29, 2002 - 03:32 AM

http://cr.middlebury.edu/art/Powell/afghanistan/Taliban/as47.htm

Again and again I read before coming back to Afghanistan that among the many things banned by the Taliban was the flying of kites. On my first afternoon after returning again to Herat in October of 2000, I opened my window and counted fourteen kites visible at that moment in one direction. The destruction the great Buddhas at Bamyan was a tragedy indeed. I saw them in the snow, in 1972. However, we should bear in mind also the willful destruction to major monuments that was done by a Western power in Afghanistan not so very long ago, and this was by no means the only example of this kind in South Asia. That decision was made by worldly, well-educated, well-fed British authorities operating from a position of strength, not by a half-blind mullah and a circle of barely literate survivors from twenty years of savage warfare and pillage, men with almost no experience of the outside world.

no more words after this from me - this man and his art is more beautiful than just this - i advise you to see his photography in full, including kashmir to see why everyone loves it; and why it's so bloody at the same time.

Peace. Dawud
