What is war like?

During the summer of 1999, I took part in the Israeli army's basic training program. Although my training wasn't as long as Israeli citizen's training, I was in the program long enough to know a bit about what "combat" is like. I don't want to deceive anyone into thinking that my lifewas in danger during any part of the training, because other than the usual risks of being in Israel (terrorism, bombs, etc) I was always pretty safe. Part of my training involved mock combat, an excercise designed to portray an very seemingly real battle. Although deep down I always knew that I wasn't in danger of being killed, as I held a rifle and ran through fields "firing" my weapon, my heart pounded so loud that I thought I'd tip the "enemy" off as to where I was hiding. What made the experience even more realistic was the my military base was on the outskirts of another military base that tested bombs and missiles. So, while our 1a.m . mock battles were heppening out on the fields, the sky above us was lit by bombs, missiles and rockets.....one of the most intense situations I've ever experienced.
I'm sure that my situation was totally different than a real battle, and I'm glad I've never had to really fight in a war, but what I do miss about the experience is the bond that forms between you and others in your unit. At no point in the excerise was there ever any doubt in my mind that if faced with a real war, I'd protect my fellow soldier with as diligence as I was protecting my own. After living, sleeping, eating and training with a group of men and women who are as dedicated to a country as you are, you become so close that to lose one of them is truly to lose a piece of yourself. There is truly no other relationship like it. The most surprising aspect of the relationship is how fast this intense feeling grows. I began to feel this incredible selflessness after only 72 hours of training, when most of my unit-mates were still practically strangers. We would never have let eachother down and we would have risked our lives for one another. I have never felt as safe, even in such a dangerous situation.
If you love a country, than there is nothing more incredible than showing your appreciation through dedicating some time to that country's army. In the end, you gain so much more than your country does....so it is always worth it. Your self-esteem triples, your attitude changes for the best and you are a much better person (I know some may be mad at me for having said this because you CAN be a good person without going to the army....although there is a certain goodness that only the army can give you).
I challenge you all to give this life a try if you are fortunate enough to get the chance. You will NEVER forget it.
PS. Try not to think of the army and associate it with war. Most basic training programs don't deal with war, but rather with general protection of civilians in everyday situations. You CAN be a soldier and be againt war....trust me it is easier than you think.

Terrorism is when people get greedy and want other land. Well look at it this way: U.S.A is helping both tamil and singaleas in Sri Lanka. Why??
Well they want us to kill each other so that they can use the land to attack Pakistan, India, Bangledesh and Other areas that are close by. But when Osman bin Laden bomb a tower they make a big deal out of it.Well United State is killing innocent people isn't that a terrorist attack. The fact that they're bombing other nation seem normal. But when a person like Osman bin Laden kill 6000 people they make a big fuss. Look terrorism can only stoped if we stop being greedy for more land

Terriosm itself is not when people get greedy serpent. War is usually when people get greedy. They want the others land. The attack on sept. 11 was a terrorist attack and i don't think osama bin laden wanted the land of america. I think it's more like he wanted to kill. I don't know why but i'm sure he wanted to kill people. And he did. He killed thousands of innocent people. He killed them for nothing. I don't see what happiness he got from it. I only see sorrow in the deepest of the hearts of the americans and people all over the world. You know something though, you got one point right, serpent. It's the fact that some people when something happens to them they take it so seriously, but when they do something else we can't take seriously. United States of america is a very rich country and also a very powerful one too. They can do so much with what they have. They do alot. I'm not saying no. Right now the american troupes are in afghanistan trying to find a killer. Do you realize that while they are doing this, there are also killing thousands of others. To find one person there killing thousands. bin laden killed 6000 people, but does killing others pay for what he has done. Do two wrongs make a right? huh? think about it.
