Web voting:
It needs security (that nobody is allowed to vote hmm 100 times)
It needs good programming that ppl would feel comfortable using it.
It needs a 24/7 control of a living person (administrator)
It needs a fast server (simultaneous voting)
Thats all i can think of at the moment

thanks a lot Kaiser,
i was thinking about more technical points, like which language to program with, what to consider to implement the application before it goes on the web,
the question is what am i supposed to learn?

Ok. I must admit i also need lots of knowledge on that as well. I plan to have something similar to online voting myself on my private web page. Something resembling polls, but more varied.
So my thanx as well for very usefull links up there. Thanx everybody.

e-voting, yes here we go ;)

if you want to go deeper to the technical aspects of e-voting, i'd like to recommend the following site to you:
http://www.e-voting.at/main.php?l=E
also take a look at HICSS, it's very interesting to all e-issues. (http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/)
furthermore there are people at diebold working on it - using their touchscreens at the latest elections in california as well - and facing vast criticism about their security holes (http://www.diebold.com/dieboldes/)
hope this helps
best,
laurent

The number 1 thing, really, seems to be auditability: how can we go back and make sure that what has been tallied is what was selected...
..."solutions" have ranged from voting electronically and submitting a paper ballot (not much point to electronic vote?), printing out votes on paper tape, etc.
