USA government: one of the reasons racism is still an issue?
February 10, 2004 - 09:51 AM

|
I have an idea and hopefully some people can add their opinions.
Point 1: I've noticed on the news and stuff. When someone speaks about how they want racial equality I get frustrated because the next segment on the news show is "How did the blacks, native americans and the rest of the people vote?" Excuse me?! Why are you seperating the people of America into groups? What happened to the idea of racial equality?! Blacks and native americans are people to! They don't think or vote differently JUST because of the color of their skin!
Point 2: Universities and colleges have "special" scholarships for black, hispanic, and native american people. WHY? And some schools even admit them so they can boast that their school is diverse. Schools should judge you on academics or talent but not your skin color. It's unfair.
Comments???

Can you please further explain how that discriminate against blacks & native americans? Looks like plain statistical studies to me.

Racial discrimination sucks. I back you on that, we say that we are done with that but there are still some bones left in closet which need to be cleared.
As long as what you have just stated continues, then we just have to know that we are still far much away from obtaining racial equality.
aluta continua.

This is the time we all have to come together as one, despite of colour, let us cat as though we were not at one time master and slave, lets scrap this evil from our face.

Racism
February 11, 2004 - 04:45 AM

In the American society, racism exists as much in the minds of the whites, as it is in the minds of the blacks. (First, I had written 'in the white minds' - but there's nothing called a white mind or a black mind!). And they are equally responsible why it is not eradicated completely. As long as the African Americans harp on the irrevocable past, the issue, and the ill-feeling as a bonus, will continue to live.
Yeah, it's true that the US govt. should not treat the African American in a 'special' way (special scholarships etc). This is the blunder that the Indian govt. has been doing for decades now. If all are equal - let them be equal. If we really believe that God has made us equal, we should not try to make ourselves 'more equal' by trimming the trivial discrepancies. That will just increase complexity and reduce equality.

Well I'm sorry to say I have no specific examples, but alot of times when I watch national news, there is a story about how "this is racist that is racist, s/he is racist because..." then on the next segment of the show they talk about the voting, they say "How are the blacks voting? native americans? everyone else?"

Yes, some schools prvide financial aid for hispanics, blacks or native americans ONLY. It's practically like they're are saying that these specific races are always poor and will need help. And they have scholarships and it says something like "Hispanic heritage scholarship. this is only for hispanics" they have the same for african americans and native americans

Ashley - the reason for Affirmative action is that the Black community has already suffered discimination for hundreds of years - we can't just level the playing feild now and declare it's all fair.
They have been disadvantaged in terms of education and economics - the White community has more money due to the oppresion of blacks - this is its own advantage, this is an economic advantage - more white per capita own bussinesses etc.
It is therefore proper at this juncture to provide some advantages for the Black community in the short term to make up for all those years of disadvantage.
Certainly in an ideal world ability would be the only determining factor - but it is not a perfect world, we did oppress the Black community and there is still de facto economic discrimination.
In terms of breaking down the vote - well, the Blacks and to a lesser extant Hispanics etc vote in blocks - 90% of blacks can be expected to vote for the Democratic candidate. 80% of white men can be expected to vote for the Republican candidate. Around 80% of Jews will vote for the Democrate etc.
When people vote this strongly along demographic lines it sometimes pays to understand it from that perspective.

wow luke you have made me see things from a whole other perspective! Thanks buddy! Anyway I see your point that the black community was opressed of course who could forget that. But I just came up with a sort of idea/wish/dream? haha Anyway I think maybe these scholarships and advantages maybe should continue to be used for a while but I really think slowly they should ease out of it. Which has brought me to a new question:
I know that these different races have different cultures and different backgrounds and things like that. Is it maybe their certian lifestyle or way of thinking and upbringing that continues to keep them behind?
(side note: I'm not in anyway trying to be rude to anyone. I'm just saying because I don't want my comments or questons taken the wrong way)

Piety is the most important criteria. It is better that decisions are not made on the basis of race.
Unfornately there is need for affirmative action as many have had a history of systemic exclusion.

Good, no , i mean EXCELLENT post.
A better way i have here:
Always to seek out abilities in people.
What are they special skills or abilities they are proud of and what can they do for the community.
Every knowledge or ability is good and should be rewarded.
Every effort should also be rewarded.
