My theory for World Peace
March 15, 2002 - 09:43 AM

I have a theory for world peace, what we need is a common enemy. Think about it for a minute. There is conflict all over the world, bickering over issues that at times can seem so trivial, yet the war continues. Now, if the world was at threat by, an example, aliens (Tsk Tsk) we would have to band together as a planet, everyone working together against this common threat to everyone. It would force these little conflicts over frivial international concerns to be put aside and we would be working side by side, united to defeat the threat to life.

I got this idea after watching Idependance Day a while back. It works at a lower level as well, take a footy team for example, now, there are quite a few people who are in my footy team whom I have...........differences with, (ie, theyre dickheads) but when you go out on the field, it all changes, you stick up for these people for some reason, you band together and I believe the same principle would apply on a global scale.

So, what should we do, I don't know, invite evil aliens to attack us, perhaps make a world wide conspiricy that we are under threat of being exterminated. Whatever happens, Ithink the moral of this is that, we need a common enemy to create world peace.

Star Trek :P
March 15, 2002 - 09:52 AM

Torin my friend, what you just said was and is the whole theme of star trek :P

They find out there not alone in the universe, bind together as a planet..blah blah blah...its all in that movie..um..first contact.

But i guess it would work...

But if we got one of these enemys, what if they kicked our asses...

anyways....stupid idea...could work...i guess only time will tell though..

why do we need an external enemy
March 15, 2002 - 11:29 AM

some enemies right here on earth might be:
*AIDS
*Global Warming
*Poverty
It seems that for now, we keep looking for 'others' to attack, when there are plenty of enemies of our own making. Will we realize before it is too late?

this is interesting.

Nobody's taken the initiative of thinking of a common 'goal' instead of a common 'enemy'

While sure Josie's point could be a common goal of eradicating AIDS, hunger, poverty, etc - it was phrased as a negative.

And we wonder why people are violent.

My theory for global peace?

Common goal to colonise Mars. Common dreaming.

what nick said!

the perception of a threat relies on the communication of the consequences if that threat is not vanquished. What we need is the 'face' on the things that are killing the earth, and a shift in the human psyche to ensure the word us (people) does *not* imply a *them* (people) but rather the one team...... Wonder what might happen if we put the worlds top marketers and educators on the job with an open budget and the one aim - to pull the world's population behind solving the problems that threaten to kill us...

i think its a bad idead for the aliens to come and then we unite to fight them back and stuff like that.
actually, i dont understand that why are you under the impression that if at all aliens have to come here, they will be ilke monsters out of no where. movies are just movies.
i think if aliens have to visit the earth at all, then they should have the technology to do this. meaning that they are going to be intelligent life forms like us or maybe superior to us.
meaning, if at all they are intelligent, they have the ability of thinking about peace and co-existance.
so, why cant we just be peaceful with them and have gallaxial peace, a broader view of global peace.
anyways, why am i discussing aliens, its too kiddish and impractical.

as for global peace, i think i have a formula,
no country in the world should be allowed to have its independent army/military.
think about it. if you feel curious enought, maybe i ll tell in detail.

interesting.

everyone here admits to some extent the stereotype of aliens is that they will be unfriendly to us.

This is probably inaccurate, so long as they find us first.

As that would require massive mathematical accomplishments, amazing intellect, and would literally take many hundreds of generations to develop a spacefaring society broad enough to bring them out here to Earth.

In a sense, if they were violent, how the heck did they last the trip?

good plan
all we need to do is manufacture an enemy, coz, as much as we hate to admit it, we humans are a spiteful, vengeful, violent breed and will take at will the oppurtunity to make others miserable.
for example, temptation island: we eargly await for someones relationship to break up, leaving them miserable.
And even football, the most entertaining games are when someone is slaughtered.
And, I'm going back a bit now, but the Romans made killing into a popular sport, and I fear these instincts are still evident in our lives today.
So, back onto your topic Torin, we need an enemy, we need bloodshed, we need to be afraid in order to survive, as sad as it is. For so long we have sought refuge in each other, here on Earth, for the enemy we require. If we extend beyond the reaches of our homeland, we may find that we no longer need to fight amongst ourselves as we will have a bigger and more fearsome enemy to combat.
And you must remember, we humans fear above all else, that which we do not know or understand, so by pointing the finger at the stars, we can manufacture, on the basis of pissweak 'government conspiracies' and false 'scientific evidence' an enemy that the whole human race can relate to.
I don't know if that made sense, but theres my 2 cents.
chow

Daaaa, you missed my point,
March 21, 2002 - 07:54 AM

Some people out there seemed to miss my po9int I think, Josh summed it up very well I thought so read his post. Oh and Pred, I was aiming to get accross how violence brings people together, in terms of fighting fo the same.....'team'. Please tell me how the whole race of humans is going to get passionate about colonising Mars? Not likely, yet passionate about saving your own race, that is feasible.

Oh, and to those who out there say "how'd you know all aliens are evil" Have you met one that isn't? As far as we know they're not real, ie. they're fiction. This means that they're made up, therefore when making them up, we can make them to be exactly what we want. Stop being such a........ I can't think of the word, just don't over analyse everything, relax, some things in liife are meant to be appriciated superficially.
