Re: Is Poverty Laziness ?

Poverty is about a lack of opportunity, and an inability to cope.
People who live in poverty must work long hours every single day in order to survive. For example, if I were too sick to work, I could just take the day off. I have enough savings to be able to buy food tomorrow. But someone in poverty does not have savings, and therefore does not have the ability to take a day off if they are sick. If they don't work, then they don't eat tomorrow.
People who live in poverty are incredibly hard working, because they have to work every day just to survive. They are not lazy in the slightest. If they were given the chance to make a better life for themselves, they would take it in an instant, just like anybody else would.
Calling them lazy implies that they have a choice in the matter. It's like saying that they choose to live in substandard housing; that they choose to keep their children from school; that they choose to work fifteen hours a day just to earn three dollars. No one in their right mind would choose those things.
I for one think that I can learn a lot from the work ethic of those who live in poverty.

I somewhat agree with you Valerie: Poverty is not caused only by laziness, and we can see the counterexample that proves it on the poor, hardworking people.
However, there are some people that, culturally, are hardworking just to the point of survival and not much beyond that. If they have a choice to get promoted, have more responsabilities/new challenges and have to work harder to earn more, they wouldn't take it.
I can't make an analysis on which group (the borderline lazy or the ones who would take any opportunity to grow) is the predominant one, but we have to acknowledge the fact that, depending on the culture, the poor are not always hardworking. That comes from personal experience in Brazil.

Perhaps I am thinking more about extreme poverty. I am thinking of my own travels in South America and Africa. I think that laziness can come from being (economically) comfortable, and those who are very poor are definitely not comfortable.
Maybe there are people out there who work just to the point of survival, but I don’t believe that they are the majority. I like to think that most people want to better themselves. But I’m a bit of an idealist.

Yeah, for sure, extreme poverty is a different case, and what you said apply to those cases perfectly =)
I'm talking about my immediate experience here in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), where there's little extreme poverty (where people can actually die of starvation). So, culturally, a lot of people only work to the point where they can sustain their family.
I don't really know where does this culture come from, but some scholars say that, when slavery was abolished in the late 1800's, the slaves did just that: work only to the point of subsistence. There was no point in working more than that when they were slaves, and the learned that behavior and passed to other generations...
Too bad this behavior stayed impregnated here for so long..

I don't think we should come right out and say poverty is as a result of laziness, I think that it is situational. In some parts of the world many poor persons work hard to make ends meet but because of the inequality of opportunity which exists in these societies, the poor are forced to stay in their position with no hope of moving out or ending the cycle of poverty which exists. A case in point, the Caste System which exists in India.

I don't think that the poverty is a result of laziness. There is many places where people have not enought companies where they can work. Only the way is to become a refugee - a difficult decision, especially when you have a family. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am living now and today!

I think laziness, in very rare and negligible cases, does cause poverty. Poverty is the lack of opportunities. One may have all the energy, aspirations to make his family's life better, but without the opportunity to invest, to get employed, to get a good education, all his effort is futile.
Lack of opportunity as you all said before, is caused mostly by socio-political factors. In some countries one's tribe determines the availability of opportunities. In other countries, your political affiliation determines the availability of opportunities for you.

No. In American conservative perspective, being poverty is considered as mental barrier. I believe everybody can be poverty or wealthy. However, Everybody does not have an opportunity to become poverty or wealthy equality. Here in America, poverty is a choice. Being poverty in somewhere in poverty village in Sudan is complicated option. Because it's the way of life. Yet, he/she has a chance to thrive out.
