Drugs????????????????
February 7, 2004 - 10:02 AM

Hello Friends,

I think its almost the time again we put out attention to the drug devil ,In Sri Lanka, if you take the daily newspapers you will see at least 5 or 6 cold crimes because of drugs and i dont think its any better in other South Asian countries or even in western countries as well.

We should add some discussions on plans to educate
and spread the awareness of youth about this and make this open for all ages.

As we all know , prevention is zillions times worth that the cure, what happen in Sri Lanka is that youth goes to experiment this with seeing their friends doing so, first they would start with smoking and ends up with drugs. And once they starts, there is no going back, and with the traditional attitudes of our societies, those
groups are bound to be cornered in the society which makes the situation even worst.

With my work with the Colombo civil committee, I got a chance to have discussions with some police officers who actively involved with the fight against drugs in Sri Lanka , what they say is that the present youth is a bit better than the ones of the previous time
but still its not in a statues to be happy of.

And most of other crimes such as robberies, prostitution and even murders have the root cause as drugs.

I would like to hear about your views on this, hope this discussion would go on..

cheers,

Udara

Bangladesh poses as big a challenge, despite the fact that HIV has a tentative presence currently (even among vulnerable populations). Almost half the population is under 15 years of age, and risky behaviours-including high rates of unsafe injecting drug use, a thriving sex trade and unsafe blood-transfusion practices-are widespread. And the people involved in these activities overlap; many sex workers also inject drugs, injecting drug users often frequent sex workers; and some studies indicate that users often sell blood. Condom use is almost non-existent. In central Bangladesh, more than 90% of sex workers do not use condoms; elsewhere in the country, virtually all surveyed sex workers have reported at least occasionally having sex without condoms. Meanwhile, it is estimated that more than 90% of injecting drug users are exposed to contaminated injecting equipment. In addition, knowledge of AIDS is slight: only about 65% of young people, and fewer than 20% of married women and 33% of married men have heard of AIDS. The upshot is a very high potential for rapid HIV transmission. In the most recent surveillance round, up to 4% of injecting drug users in central Bangladesh were found to be HIV-positive-up from around 1% in surveillance rounds in previous years.

the drug war

how do we fight drugs?

i can't do hand-to-hand combat with an ecstacy pill because it wont fight back..... unless i stop it from getting in the country but that takes a lot of money and resources and from what we've seen in the united states, the drugs still get in. i work for a group called the toronto raver info project. we work from a philosophy of harmreduction; instead of telling youth to "say no to drugs" we instead take the "say know" approach.

youth are going to do drugs no matter how many times you tell them that it's the devil and they're going to jump off a bridge or get HIV. it is important that youth are informed about the choices they make so that they can keep their bodies safe. the way that we do that at TRIP is by providing condoms, information (made by youth-users, for youth-users), and onsite peer councling. if you are interested in learning more about our approach check out our website:

Best way to fight drugs is to leran most of them and partially legalize them. And keep them under strict control and inside controlled environment. Fighting it wont do major results.

DRUG DANGERS
February 22, 2004 - 02:13 AM

The most important thing is to educate people on the dangers of drugs. Let me SPELL OUT some of these dangers for you:

HEROIN/OPIUM will damage the liver and kidneys. It also
causes ulceration of blood vessel walls. Highly Addictive.

COCAINE causes the heart to enlarge and weaken. It also interferes with the electrical impulses generated in the heart. Steady use WILL CAUSE ---CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE.

METH/XTASY- Meth and its derivative "X" will leave your brain and nervous system in a similar condition to that of an alzheimer's patient.

Is this clear enough?

MARIJUANA is basically an intoxicant, but one joint contains the same amount of tar as FOUR high-tar unfiltered cigarettes. Prolonged use can lead to an attitude of indifference, as well as psychological dependence.

ALCOHOL abuse can cause liver and brain damage, cellular damage, colon cancer, stomach cancer and rapid aging.

SUCROSE (Refined White Sugar) is the most abused drug in the world. Found in candy, by the bag, cookies, ice cream, etc., its abuse causes diabetes, contributes to obesity, high blood pressure, yeast infections in women, reduced immune system function, osteoporosis, sticky blood platelets and heart disease.

Is this clear enough?

Substance abusers don't belong in jail, they need counseling and education. Decriminalization would help put violent dealers out of business. Also, addressing poverty and other social issues leading to dependence will be helpful in dealing with this problem.
