UN: great idea but a failure of an organization
March 14, 2002 - 01:48 AM

UN was an organization formed with an intention to have a world body, which would solve all international disputes peacefully, avoiding friction between the nations and most importantly having a non-polarized world.
Is the world like that? At least I don’t think so.

Won’t start with how it was a failure right since it was formed, lets talk latest first.

In case of Palestine, UN has the attitude of let them do what they want to do. I don’t see any sort of atleast major initiative taken by the UN to solve the issue.
Now, all my dear American friends, I know how you hate Osama. But did it ever occur to you, why was there an Osama Bin Laden who wanted to destroy Israel and America?
The thing is that the UN is playing a very passive role, of just criticizing the violence and dong nothing about it. Since Israel has an upper hand in this region (mind you, I am not against Israeli or anybodies stand here) more and more helpless muslims die here. As a result, the muslims community throughout the world feels sympathetic for Palestinians and the fundamentalism beings.

A proper solution, had I been in charge of the UN and the way I analyze it, would be to hit at the problem. Today there is Israeli incursion into Palestinian territories only because Palestinian militants go on suicide missions bombing and killing Israeli people. Then, due to the Israeli atrocities, the Palestinians fight back. The cycle goes on.
So, for a solution, the only possible way out I see is that, UN looks into the matter, militarize the area heavily, so that no Palestinian can go into the Israeli area nor can any Israeli come into Palestinian area. Declare Palestine as an independent country. Now, due to heavy militarization in the area, it becomes very easy to see to it that no foreign mercenaries enter Palestine to fight in the name of the religion, also control the sources from where they gather all their arms and ammunition. Also, due to very low interaction temporarily, there wont be any suicide killings de-escalating the situation there to quite an extent and giving the people a taste of peaceful living.
Having done this for about a year and a half, start teaching the newer generation the value of religious tolerance and peaceful living, instead of teaching them patriotism.
Slowly, start de-militarization, BUT very slowly. Take your own time, say about 10-15 years to completely end the UN influence in the region.
Since no major incidents of violence occur under a military rule, even if, say you used force to achieve it, would mean a very peaceful solution. Even if it does restrict peoples freedom there temporarily, for about 15 odd years for not being able to interact, but atleast its better than people being massacured there for 10-15 years.

Presence of American soldiers in Saudi Arabia is another cause of rise in muslim fundamentalism. I don’t think I would quite put the blame on America for this. America is a country like any other country. But who doesn’t like to dominate given a chance? What’s Americas fault if they are so powerful? I think UN is a world body and should take initiative that America doesn’t dominate the world. But instead, it more often than not, plays to the tunes of America. If America places its troops in Saudi Arabia, cant the UN be strong enough and ask them to withdraw? If US feels insecure about terrorism today, we have only the US policies so far to blame. At least finish it now. If we want peacekeepers there, we could deploy soldiers of some other country or atleast, take the muslim world into confidence that the UN belongs to them also.

Instead of doing something like this and taking initiative in an active conflict, the kind of attitude these UN guys have is to do more of humanitarian work in places where the conflict is over. Like removing land mines from Africa is the most immediate and urgent thing UN is handling. Then it wastes time and energy into things like child relief, UNICEF, or environment protection, WWF, and stuff. I don’t say this is wrong, but there are other NGOs capable of doing these things and playing the same role as UN is playing. But somewhere in the international issues we need UN only and no body else. UN doesn’t realize this.

Supplying food and medical relief in Afghanistan is the latest thing UN feels like concentrating on. And it even received a noble prize for peace for its work in Afghanistan.
But did anyone realize, that had UN been a little aggressive 20 years ago, when there were Russians trying to invade Afghanistan and Afghans were fighting back and there was a rise in religious fundamentalism back then and an organization of Pakistan, armed by American weapons, the great old taleiban, toppled the legitimate peoples govt. there and set up its own fundamentalist govt. doing all sorts of barbarism to the local population there. Nothing. UN just condemned the acts. Somehow, taleiban even got recognition as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan from countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and UAE. Never did UN feel like intervening into these real issues, for which UN was formed.

Infact, even today, they are more in support of dictatorship in Pakistan thinking this to be the only way out and thinking the guy did a good job by supporting the fight against Afghanistan.
Somehow, they fail to realize that since they supported musharraf today, the kind of mindset a future generation general is going to have is that he can do as he pleases. Coz the army is in his control and the rest of the world wont utter a world. Somehow, they don’t realize today’s news are going to be tomorrows history and history is going to give all the examples, good or bad, to the future generation. Maybe tomorrow we may have another Hitler from Pakistan. Infact, why tomorrow, musharraf is the most cunning creature the way he is and he has proved it. Don’t even need to wait till the next generation.

Someone like Osama Bin Laden who was a wanted terrorist in America for whome, Americans crossed around half the globe to nab him and for him, felt all right to bomb the entire nation and kill as many al-quaida men and taleiban men as possible, have civilian casualties there. Surprisingly, UN praised America. Now as far as nabbing an international terrorist is concerned, or attacking a nation to topple the govt. there is concerned, is something major in the world politics. US doesn’t have the right to do what it did. But somehow, since UN plays such a passive role, like they played here too, that no one trust UN anymore on any kind of action. So… cant blame America if it attacked Afghanistan. Blame goes to UN, for supporting it instead of opposing America and taking some initiative itself.

UN could have solved the Afghanistan issue 20 years ago and we would have a peaceful and somewhat prosperous Afghanistan today. But somehow, it chose to play a passive role 20 years later, by trying to supply food and medicine now, that the nation has tattered and get the noble peace award.
Looking at this as an example, I see that 20 years from now, UN will be providing food and aid to Palestinians and Israelis.
Now that’s what you call an optimum peaceful solution.

And for the latest. America increases its military budget so as to enhance its missile range and nuclear capabilities. It wants countries like Iraq, Iran, China, Russia, Israel, India and Pakistan within its missile range. i.e. in case of any eventuality, America should always have the upper hand.
America may conduct another nuclear test openly, declaring it to the world. And even if they wont conduct nuclear tests, they will see to it that their nuclear capabilities are enhanced further, coz they are not sure of what kind of weapons Iraq has.
Now I don’t think there is any kind of justification for this. For all the Americans reading this, if you have any, then post it here. But again, who doesn’t want to be powerful? But who is supposed to stop them? Where is the UN? Where are all the guys who issue sanctions? Where are all the Japanese folks who flocked to India during our nuclear tests trying to explain us the ill-effects of a nuclear war and teaching us the importance of a de-nucearised world?
Or is America something special, something great that they get the right to do this.

And last but not the least, about 1/5th of the world population is Indian. India is military wise as well as economically a much powerful (I am not saying richer) and influential nation. But it doesn’t have any representation in the UN security council. Thanx to all the internal politics of power going on inside UN. This only forces us to believe that UN is not our organization. It belongs to the west.

Something tells me, the way UN is functioning today, we are heading for a jehad-crusade kind of a war, and then the UN emerges as the great humanitarian relief organization.

The U.N. plays a passive role, oh, i didn't even know it was playing a role. I think it needs to take a look at why it was formed and revise it's objectives because they seem to be forgotten. America is a super power but that doesn't mean it has the right to do whatever it pleases. The U.N should be able to publically oppose any decisions made by the U.S. but that doesn't seem to be the case. The U.N does help people, don't get me wrong, i just feel that it doesn't do enough. But then i guess if there was peace, the U.N would cease to exist. Now wouldn't that be a great loss?
