Identity & belonging
February 5, 2004 - 05:50 AM

I was out with some friends and they were talking about that same issue that I've been thinking on for a long long time...IDENTITY..BELONGING...
To what people should belong???
I was thinking that maybe some of the confusion that I have from time to time is due to the belonging issue,I mean if someone is quite sure to what or to where or to whom he belongs he wouldn't be confused...
I can belong to a place,a person,or a beleif...
Today when I was sitting with my friends some of them were saying: " I belong to nowhere...I belong to all the world, and not a specific place"
Another one was saying : " I belong to wherever I am", another was saying " I belong to wherever I want to belong"...
You can also belong to a person,When you love somebody so much you can just belong to him I remember that beautifull art piece of the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, made into a beautiful music opera by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg where the character called Peer Gynt who is a satire on man. Peer Gynt (the character) is a carefree, selfish, irresponsible lad whose story develops from the daily lies and fictitious stories he makes up, to the kidnapping of a bride, to the encounter with the trolls, to standing in the Hall of the Mountain King (the very famous musical), to the wandering through Morocco & Egypt, and finally, back to Norway where he is again faced with life most basic riddle: “What is it to be yourself?”.
"Where have I been myself, whole and true? Where have I been?” asked Peer Gynt.
Solveig (his wife) answered without hesitating: "in my faith, in my hope, and in my love."
Stunned by her answer, Peer moaned... “My wife! You innocent woman! O, hide me, hide me within!"
It's quite a wonderfull artpiece, and it actually makes me think a lot about the meaning of identity and belonging..
A friend of mine beleives that people who are not quite sure about belonging and the place or the thing they belong to are most of the time those who weren't raised in quite a healthy environment, for example my father has died 4 years ago and ther for I just have some difficulties with the thing I belong to,allthough I'm sure I belong to a certain place and to a certain thing, though I can't touch it right now or completely see it...which might cause some confusion from time to time...

There is no confusion about my belonging. There are fixed identity markers and there are others that are ascribed.
We are all citizens of this world living in athesitic, monotheisitc and polytheisitc polities. I have adopted monotheisitc commands for relating and living with love for all as there are cognitive blocks that need time for redress.

Why do you think it is in man's nature to seek belongings/groups?

Yes,Muhammad I understand ofcourse that kind of belonging you're talking about but what I actually meant was about the goals in life, and the plans the person should do in the future...
Sometimes you feel you belong to a caertain place it shouldn't be necessarily from that place originally,or sometimes you feel you belong to a certain person maybe your lover your father or your mother, and sometimes you just feel you belong to an idea,a beleif or maybe a field...

Two worlds,
I like your post a lot...
Well,I beleive that a home can be found anywhere..It doesn't really have to be your homeland, the place where you live,or the place where you were born..It's there where you can find a familly, home and stuff like that..
And there you can find your identity and stop getting confused about who you are..

I would be bored living in one place my whole life - at this point I have lived in Connecticut, New York, New Hampshire, Florida, Montana, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Mexico and Israel.
I think your identity is an evolving quality - the impressions made when you are young are the deepest, but as you travel through life who you are and what you identify yourself with can evolve.
I think exploration is a key to life - I think people should make an effort to reolize and appreciate beyond the little sphere into which they are born. Many people never see the wide world.
Just writing this reminded me how much I want to travel again.

Culture shock and a European take on the issue of identity.
In Europe we do indeed define ourselves along the lines of information gathering and diffuse borders.
No rigid hierarchical system with fixed forms of politess, or aproach.
So the importance the statement Solveig makes, in my view, is the acceptance, un unexpected offered reality, a homebase.
So when traveling, home can be anywhere, as long as this centering takes place. And indeed art and books can give you the same feeling, of recognizing yourselve. Faith, love and believe spell safety to a small child too. Mom will be there, she hugs and she always comes back.
And ever forgiving.
Welcome, your house is my house. ..(keep an eye on him)

Yugoslavia is funny. I used to live there too, but after Slovenia got independent not anymore.
Anyway, it is good to have identity, just to know where you start from. I mean it is good to know yourself before moving to know other people. At least on that way we'll never ran out of topic.

Hi Luke,
Well Travelling is a real wonder, you know...
I've lived in two places, when I was a kid I was living in Yugoslavia and then I moved to Cairo, and I don't think It's the last place where I would be living..
As for me,I love travelling it's one of the things that helps to find our identity, you might even find out that belongs to a place else than your real home, beside I learn a lot from travelling even more than what I might learn for years as I'm here...
I always wanted to travel all around the world by my own,and get to know all those diverse cultures and places from the east to the west and from the north to the south,it doesn't really matter where I'll decide to stay but I just really wanna do this trip...
I've been to a lot of countries, and they're all different in cultures and traditions,I really adore to see and observe those differencies,It makes me learn a lot...
