Stereotypes?
March 9, 2002 - 07:28 AM

Well, i was just wondering about stereotypes....
of countries mainly and the people in them.

Like for example (not to pick on them, but i need an example)
...the scottish are seen to have red hair, big beards, wear kilts, play the bag pipes..etc
...irish are well...dumb, and drunk..

And i wanted to know what other stereotypes there are around, of everywhere....

what do people from outside australia think about us and our country?
What do people think of all the countries....

take care people

stereotypes
March 9, 2002 - 08:57 AM

The Dutch people are greedy, the Belgians a bit boring, the germans militaristic in their precision, the people of Munich are germans, yet behave as if they are southern Europeans, the norwegians are born with skis on their feet, the finns are techies (think Nokia, think Linus Torvalds), the French are arrogant in terms of their language, and hopelessly romantic, the Italians are slow, (in fact, I have this term "lets meet at 8 PM italian time, which basically means 9ish), the people from the US are thinking that the civilised world ends at the east/west coast, the mexicans just have siesta all day and drink corona, the people from japan are highly traditional / hierarchical thinking, the australians are happy go lucky crocodile dundee style, the Arabs think their religion is the most important aspect of their life, the Christians are hypocrites, and so on and so on.

basically, i dont know much about stereotypes, i mean what stereotypes are fitting in terms of in a witty way pointing at something about a certain people, and what stereotypes are just simplistic and not very good in terms of making people Meet?

The world is getting more and more international, and well, I think stereotypes are in a way dangerous, altho fun at times.

I think at the current time the most dangerous stereotypes to develop are the stereotypes the rest of the world might be developing about the US, or about people of the Muslim faith.

I thought about it the other day: Almost everybody seems to have a strong point of view about the US, or about muslims. The US citizens are seen as a bit ignorant (altho hey: they cant help for living in a country where knowing a foreign language is considered elite), all too patriotic about their own country, and in general a bit bullish. Yet others see the US as the prime symbol of freedom and opportunities, being the land of the free and the successfull. The US is dominating several markets, including the military market, and this being because they work the hardest / have the best work ethics...

Muslims.. thats even worse. Some people do not only think that they are lazy and do not like to work, they see the muslims as being dangerous, most likely terrorists the lot of them (is it in the genes?) and in general the fact that most of the muslim countries are developing countries is their own fault..

Others see muslims as a peace-loving people, but hmm..

The thing which strikes me is how stereotypes is grown out of lack of knowledge about a certain place/people. Myself, before I actually came to Hong Kong, I saw the people there as ONLY thinking about working, and never taking a break. How far from truth I know that this is now.. Having several US friends I know that indeed the country is not filled with isolationists (sic)...

In general I think stereotypes are things we should acknowledge are only a Very crude generalisation. And most likely they are wrong also.

Hmm perhaps I just say this cos I get a bad consciousness typing stupid generalisations about australians or americans or mexicans or italians. stick out tongue

But in Norway, we DO hunt whales, and we do go skiing a lot smile Hehe

let our view of other people be based on facts, and not just the media fact. (really, how many scottish people Today have this kilt on in everyday life?)

How are the australians like really? I would Very much like to visit Australia, and hey I might get the chance next year big grin
(want to see if they have other beer than Foster's there)

--well the stereotype is probably stuff like....martial arts, and eat rice all the time, and do fung shui...(faint down)

I'm a chinese.I don't eat rice all the time,I haven't done any fung shui...

but I want to tell that we don't always eat rice, and in the north ,people even seldom have rice but noodle or something made by flor.

there was this 4 year old girl, sara, who was actually a canadian national. (her mom was indian and dad was a canadian.) she was here to visit her grandparents, who happen to stay in the neighbouring building.

somehow, this little girl was under the impression that all indians are snake charmers and wear a turban.
and when she came to india, and saw television in her grandfathers house, she said, "wow they got televisions in india."
she was under the impression that india is some tribal kinda place.
didnt know wheather to laugh or to feel bad about it.
PHULEEEZE, if u are under the same impression, break away from it.

vivek .. one stereotype about vietnam is that many people think its still under the war... the other sad thing is many people know about vietnam only as a country had war and won american.. The truth is vietnam is one of the most peaceful coutries in the world now ... also war was part of our history.. more than that we have something for people to think of when it comes to " VIETnam " thats a culture combined of 54 ethnic groups of people, thats people who i think quite warm, friendly and considerate, with beautiful musics...we have a great sense of love,life,spirit... and should one important thing GOOD FOOD!! spring rolls, square cake...

My Views
March 11, 2002 - 10:04 AM

Australians: They are a happy people, with a great sense of humor. Australians have always come off to me as being a lot like my white fellow Americans. They are jolly, easygoing, and competitive. I remember the 2000 Summer Games. If anybody watched the swimming, then you got a big dose of Americans vs. Australians. And to me they were both big personalities with strong feelings. They had the same kind of staunch pride. Also I imagine that Australia has its fair share of hicks and country bumbkins. Something that I found interesting was the fact that a lot of their ancestors were convicts/criminals who came over from Europe. Perhaps that is what gives them the rough and tough attitude, I don't know. Bit one thing I know for sure is that Australians have got a lot of spunk.

Chinese and Japanese people have always seemed to lack in artistic and creative acheivement, not including Japanese cuisine or the Chinese New Year celebrations. The men especially have a tendency to be stone-faced. Both countries place a lot on honor. I always loved the Chinese for their honor, it seems that they honor everything. The Chinese are also a happier people than the Japanese, but not the Vietnamese. The Vietnamese are a cherished people in my book, perhaps because I've had close relationships with quite a few of them. There is Bic Quin Nguyen, an extremely powerful woman, she is my mother's friend. And her husband, Mac Dom (I'm not sure if that is how you spell it. It is pronounced as Moc Dom.), the most powerful man I know. He once was telling me to poke his big marble table, so I did, and then he told me to poke his leg, he was showing me that there was no difference. The man truly was made out of granite. There was a picture of him during war times with his leg kicked up to his head (like doing the splits vertically). It took me awhile but I realized that he was holding his leg that high. The man owns like 2 ruby mines and 3 gold mines, or something. He was not ethnic Vietnamese, but an indigenous person. His daddy was a tribal leader, and so he became one too. He is also the most amazing medicine man I know. He is the reason I am going into alternative medicine. He wanted me to train under him, but I have to have a few more years of preparation before I will be fit to be a student of his. Truthfully I want to train under the Vietnamese man who looks like a lion, he is a much smilier and relaxed person. In truth Mac Dom scares me, like I said he is the most powerful man I know and I know quite a few.

Anyways I am way off of the discussion topic, so let's get back to that.

French: I see the French in a bad light. They are the most snotty people out there if you ask me. I mean in a general way there noses seem to stick up the farthest. And if they are not snotty, they are definitely not particularly friendly. The only thing I really do like about the French is the fact that pretty much every store you go into gives you a chocolate, in France.

British: The British men seem a little bit too feminine to me. Generally they are kind of condescending as a people, their accent makes them seem that way even more so. Although they are also a people very strong in literature, and very intellectually strong.

I am going to have to think some more before I continue to write on this one. So I'll leave with that for now.

Smiles, hugs, and all my love to everyone! smilesmilesmile
