I was speaking with an friend over IM about this article and it quickly escalated due to opposing points of view on the use of Google by the general public on similar matters. What are your views on the power of such technology in the hands of everyday people?
This is not an issue of the FBI publishing the names of its wanted list on the internet, but rather anyone else posting names of whoever they want to. Especially in the sense that say when you sign up to a site on the internet with poor privacy settings, search engines automatically throw your name in the bag of links to that site. ( Even worse sometimes it is your email that is exposed but don't worry, you are safe at TIG because Rob and I coded this site ) For example a google of your name is most likely going pull up your profile on TIG and whatever posts you make on this board. What this does is automatically stereotype people into the types of sites that have their name on it, whether it was intentional or not.
Take it a step further, let us assume that there is another person out there with my name and the other one was a psychotic convict (I said the OTHER one!!). What kind of ramifications would that hold for me because a search for my name splews 50 sites of newpapers reporting my supposed escape from jail. What issues would result if I a prospective employer sees this?
Thoughts.....
