Looking to help, with no costs...

Hey all,
I have been looking on the internet for a summer volunteer position and have found a lot. But the problem is I would like to not pay to volunteer. It seems strange that most volunteer sites want more than $1500.00 just to help out. Does anyone know of any org's located in East Europe that take qualified individuals with degrees but don't require them to pay.
Thanks,
Chris in the Virgin Islands

Hi Chris,
I saw you posted this email way back at the start of this year. Obviously summer has already passed this year, but maybe you might still be interesred. Anyway, what you say is true. It is really hard to find a volunteer organisation which doesn't charge money - my thoughts exactly about the seeming contradiction!
Anyway, this organisation offers such placements, but not in Eastern Europe. Still thought you might be interested though: http://www.kidsworldwide.org There are placements offered in Ghana, Cameroon, Peru, Brazil and Philippines.

I Guess the reason they ask money is because taking a volunteer unfortunately costs also money.
Housing, daily transportation to your worklocation, food etc. Also these organisations invest a lot of time in you in the form of training you to do a certain task or getting you up-to-date with the local situation.
A worker will spend a large amount of time with you explaining what and what-not to do.
Remember that many organisations financialy just rely on gifts and need to spend great deals of money just to be able to do their job or to replace and buy (often very expensive) equipment.
These are reasons why these organisations charge you money to volunteer. You can do wonderful work for them, but you will also cost money to them.

attesting for kidsworldwide

hey people,
i'm jenna and i volunteered with a project coordinated by kidsworldwide last summer and, since i see kate from kidsworldwide has made a posting, i wanted to let you know it's totally legit and there really is no middle man.
i volunteered at one of their ghana projects (teaching at a primary school in ejura) and visited another of their projects. it is cheap, the living is simple, and you really get to know the neighbours.
i was a bit nervous about going to africa without knowing anyone, but the project coordinators were completely helping and caring - they helped me with anything i needed being far from home and in a new place.
lastly, the money you pay goes to the project and your accomodations, not anywhere else. that cannot be said for many volunteer organizations - look into it!
any questions anyone, email me at jenjosmith@hotmail.com
