Hi Omar,
It's an interesting question... From what I've seen, school is often as much a social phenomenon than an educational one.
Going to the "right" school brings with it social connections and networks that allow one to access future resources (not just financial, but also relationships). Who you know is often as important as what you know. School serves as the venue for introducing many young people to esteemed individuals within a community and/or other young people with connections to them.
School also plays into a distressing trend towards credentialism in many societies - "I am someone because I have a certificate that says I am someone." We gain our self-image and worth based on an institutionalized system of gaining credentials that certify that we have put in the time, paid the money, and achieved certain standards of performance.
Over the past 150 years in industrialized regions, school has also served as the institution to socialize youth into the rhythms and norms of a particular industrial economy (e.g. 9 to 5 routine, repetitive tasks, away from family, working in chunks of time with pre-determined breaks).
It served the needs of particular people at a particular phase of global development. But, there are serious questions being raised in education circles as to whether school as we know it actually serves the interests of youth or society in a globalized, ICT-empowered world.

Schools/universities allow us to learn how to learn. It is not enough to read books, in order to fully understand things around us we need guidance from people who are more understanding of a particular subject. This is especially true within the sciences, it is amazing to look back on texts that several years ago where incomprehensible but now seem mere primers. Teachers within schools give the perspective of years of experience and understanding that reading books will never accomplish. A good teacher is especially valuable.
Grat people who do not have formal educations are the exception not the rule. This argument is often brought by people avoiding entering University who consider themselves the next Donald Trump. While it is true that some people are able to transend traditional education, the majority do it the normal way.

We goto school because it's the social norm.
I liked Terri's point about the right schools, but I personally believe I have good contacts and a good network yet I went to a really rough, inner-city school. So I guess it depends on what kind of person you are; the go-getter who'll get by anyway, or the person who needs that level of security - the knowledge that you WILL have those things that 'good schools' can give to you.
Also, Omar, I love your point about great people not by nature having gone through, or all the way through a standardised education process. I totally agree, and I feel that one can be great without a degree. One thing I will say however, is that one will get by much quicker with a degree and this is a fact that I find hopelessly frustrating.
Ahhh, a good rant always helps.

Nelson, you are making me laugh telling someone thier questions are stupid. How empowering is that? Things aren't always as they seem. Maybe our friend is asking this question on quite another level than what your logical brain can handle at the moment. I suggest you meditate on it! Injoy. With love.

We humans have multiple intelligences, and schools develop linguistic, logical and to a certain extent interpersonal intelligences.
We go to school to better comprehend the world around us, to develop critical thinking abilities and to foster relationships.
However, as the previous person commented, it has become commonplace to see people studying for grades and sometimes it is sad that education has become mere memory and training as opposed to learning and enlightening.
On the brighter not though, this tough training develops our logical skills, making us better scientists, mathematicians engineers etc.

We attend school to learn and to engrave our skills, just like the from coal we diamonds... our mentors do the same thing.
Yes I agree great people never attended the because they all are extra sharp then normal human, take an example of Einstein who never attended school but now we know him as great scientist, they did attended school somehow clear but then they go for college and university too.... Every great man attended school, college and university too.

It seems that a lot of people don't really know why they go to school. It's just something we do. It's a social norm, as some previous TIG users have mentioned.
I too, question whether conditioning children and youth to sit still for 6 hours a day is benefiting them in any way. University is a whole different matter, but public education from kindergarten to grade 12 seem to be geared more towards producing "properly behaved" young adults than teaching them about the world, which is, interestingly, how it's advertised, especially to the youth attending school.
As time goes by, more and more people are wondering whether the educational system needs a revamping. The question isn't if it does or not. It's how CAN we make it better? How CAN we make it work? What can be done to get the most out of our school system?

Going to school get you far in life and I don't know if you live in America or not but in the US of you don't go to school, or home school, maybe unschooled. You get homeless and stuff, And obviously when you're in pre-school or kindergarten you learn to read for can learn. The truth is I hate school but it's something that you have to do. People are saying it's a social norm but do you guys know you need a education. I guess it is a social norm but it's something you have to do to make it through society. If you don't go to school you might be homeless or something like that and you need skill in life.

For someone who is switched on and motivated anything can be learnt through private study. However, most kids need guiding in the right direction and a little support.
