Hey Nelson I think your ego is almost as big as you think your IQ is. Stop insulting people and consider the possibilities of sophistry and intellectual discourse without resotrt to low jibes. as I remember from your posts you are not keen on people giving you a hard time.
Sleep is considered a psycological re-boot allowing us to rid ourselves of the days traumas and de-frag our mental hard drive. From a biological view point the need for sleep as opposed to rest is a good question. There are many forms of sleep, most of our rest period comes during REM sleep (this is not sleep during annoying bands but rapid eye movement). It is during this period that our brains appear to go through mental calisthenics. During stress the REM period comes much sooner and in 'shallower' sleep.

Sleep is actually crucial to human health...
My father was diagnosed a few years ago with sleep apnea <http://www.sleepapnea.org/geninfo.html>. This is a condition in which a person stops breathing (often for many seconds at a time) while asleep. The body reacts by partially waking the person up, which triggers the breathing to start again. Basically, it means that the person never falls deep asleep.
The health (including mental health) impacts can be brutal. In my father's case, his blood pressure went up considerably and his judgment at home and work was severely impaired. Things got so bad that my parents nearly divorced after 30 years of marriage... without being able to pinpoint how or why my dad was doing things that made no logical sense. All because he likely hadn't had REM sleep in 4-5 years!!! No REM sleep = impaired ability to learn and to regulate mood swings.
Once my father was diagnosed with sleep apnea and fitted with an oxygen mask for sleeping, it was like night and day. Literally, from one day to the next, his life started to turn around. A bunch of other health problems cleared up. He was able to function better at work. And relationships with family and friends improved.
It's interesting that even now, we can tell immediately when his breathing machine is malfunctioning... and we get it fixed fast!

This is just one random tid-bit, but I was elated to learn in a Biopsychology course I took a few months back, that those late night sleep patterns teenagers and adolescents share, actually serve important functions developing the brain. As if it didn't go without saying that everything has its purpose. Next time your parent(s) come down on you for staying up, you can tell them your brain is developing!

A more accurate analogy would be what happens to Windows after a few months if you never defragment your disc. We need to sleep for our brain to reconfigure and learn how to do things efficiently, even more so than a file system needs sorting once in a while.

This site gives some small pieces of ideas on sleep/dream. Freud has some interesting theories on dreaming. I think sleep is important to refresh the body and also is a vital part of creating memories.

We don't fully understand the importance of sleep. What we do know is that sleep is an anabolic, or building, process. And we think it restores the body’s energy supplies that have been depleted through the day’s activities.
Sleep is also the time when the body does most of its repair work; muscle tissue is rebuilt and restored. We know, for example, that growth hormone is secreted during sleep. This hormone is important for growth in children, but is also important throughout adulthood in rebuilding tissues.
Besides that..we get extremely cranky and we don't function properly..
We all need sleep but we differ as to how much sleep an individual needs..Many adults need at least 8 hours..whereas I sleep on average 5-6 hours a night..
