Do people need religion? If yes, why? If no, why not?

1) Word religion means a way of life, a tradition or culture. A way whereby people conduct themselves on the daily basis. Since humans have tendency to pass on their knowledge and skills to their new generations hence religion is absolutely necessary.

2) People being born knowing nothing about life and the world, could only know whatever little they could and being unable to explain things mostly relied upon assumptions. Likewise as they developed, they assumed that each and everything must be happenning because somebody would be making it to happen. For example, they could not explain any natural phenomenon as we can today ie rain cycle. As generations passed the number of such assumptions increased and likewise there came a time when people began to realise things and began to raise questions to find answers. All things were a mytery to people in the earliest generations like they are to new born babies and the later people began to dispel mysteries by finding explantions. Thus people became aware of things they did not know before and the exploration continues.

People became divided into two camps, some wrapped up things into mysteries and the others uncovered and explained them. The struggle continue as superstition and sceince.

3)Why people wrapped up things into mysteries? It is because it gave them some advantage over others for exploitative reasons. When people discovered that fear was there utmost drive that motivated them into action, this information was used to exploit simple minded people by clever people to enslave them and that is how the organised religion came to being. This religion has nothing to do with its earlier natural form that was merely superstition. One may find it helpful to understand it by way of anexample. Suppose one is a very young child and the other is a grown up. Now the grown up person would have much more knowledge and skill to manipulate the child. Knowing that child fears the unknown, mother exploits this fear of the child to make him behave the way she wants. Likewise rich and powerful clever people tried to make fool of poor, uneducated and weak people. This is why organised religions are also known as tools of exploitation. Kings and priests of the time have been having things their way for a very very long time now.

This is what is happening even today in many countries if we look at tribal and feudal socieites. People who benefit from such use of religion support it to the full in order to further their own objectives.

So religion means different things to different people and they all support religions the way they undsrstand them. It will take yet more time for people to become educated enough to realise various aspects of religion both good and evil.

The hope is that as time passes and education spreads the evil aspects of religion would be forced out or fade away. It is for this reason human right must be publicised so that people could see thenugly side of the religions.

Religious politics were always about masters and slaves and that is so obvious from all religious scriptures. Read hindu scriptures which are thought to be world's oldest and you will see hindu kings having many wives and women slaves and palaces the while common people were kept well in their place. The same is true for all religious scriptures becauise they come from each other. You will not find any society free of slavery and that is a scriptural fact. Why would any god allow some people to take others as their slaves is beyond me. Such information in scriptures tells us quite clearly the mindset and background of their authors ie they were not at all written by any all good and kind god.

People therefore must try their best to grow up in knowledge and bring about change in the world for the better. Scripture based religions have no future because it is not possible to hide what scriptures contain but it may be possible to be relgious in purely spiritual terms for that is what man originally was.

regards and all the best.

What about agnostics and athiests?
January 14, 2004 - 05:08 AM

I dont have any religion now, you should have versed that question to include atheists and agnostics. I dont need a religion to tell me how to live my life, I believe I have enough common sense to decide whats right for me.
If there's a religion that claims to be from God, I'll have to be completely convinced that it really IS from God.
If its a religion that could not have been made by false prophets and if it has more sense than what I can make out of life, I'll accept that religion.

Hi Liana, whats up,
Thanks for the discussion.
I'm pretty much athiest. You say God created you and something has to create everything, so who created God? (old usual question).
If God existed and if he sent messengers, we must test the prophethood by all standards. We must find undenyable proofs that a certain messenger told the truth when he said he was getting messages from God. "miracles" of Jesus were seen by people living hundreds of years ago - remember, witches were also 'seen' by people and so were dragons and other fairy tales.

Religion has two main purposes: hope and togetherness. Hope is for that things will turn out alright. When you're in a dilemma, you will pray, or worship. These actions keep our spirits up, always reminding us that "tomorrow is another day."
But what religion does for the most part is keep us from feeling alone. The worst thing for a human being is to be utterly and completely alone. But with religion, there is knowledge that you're never alone, that God, Allah, Buddha, etc. are always near you, and always watching out for you.
You don't always need a religion: some people feel as if they could do better without it. Religion is there to "boost" the human spirit, and keep us from giving up completely.

(These are just some little tidbits that I have collected over the years. Sorry if anyone found them offensive.)

This has been a very interesting discussion...

I just ahve a few points to add to the talk that MMuhgal, Adnank and Liana were having...

I think that the accusations towards God are a double edged sword. The only proof that any of us have, scientist and religious alike (and by no means do I have those two terms as mutually exclusive) is that we are here. I have not been in a 'religion' for many years, but I know how it feels to try to figure out why we are all here.

Adnank and MMhugal I urge you to continue to question Christianity and Islam and Hinduism and Buddhism and especially Science. The Big Bang is only a theory, Gravity is an unknown. We once thought that the world was flat...

If you want everything to have a proof, then you ask for an impossible task. Even science requires a little faith....

1. when you have no religion this discussion is not for you.

2. what is ethiest? you believe that every thing was created by itself, that is again more silly, i never saw any living thing created by itself, on the other hand the reasons behind creation given by religion are wiser. i beleive god created me. i dont know what is that makes you convenced?

3. tt is really stupid to say 'false prophets', when you dont blieve in god it is okay dont do it, Cristianity is form god and i bilieve in that, there were people who saw jesus and saw his miricals the ones god has given to him, but still didnt obey him. i again say i dotn know what makes you convinced.

Liana,

welcome to the forum dear friend. Nice to have you here.

You have raised the question as to how anythings could come to being all by itself?

You are accepting the very same thing yourself ie god exists all by himself, how is that any different from what you have asked?

You see god is believed to be more complex and sophisticated being than anything that exists, so which is more believeable ie more sophistated or less?

If you do not mind, could you please explain according to your understanding how the evolution is supposed to work but it does not so you think things cannot happen as such people think who propose this theory?

Have you demanded the proof of anyone or found one yourself that god really exists and that he really created the universe? If yes, could you please share it with us.

Make belief is fine for oneself but no use when it comes to prove things to others.

regards and all th best.

The question is whether or not you agree with the conventional definition of god as described by established religion.

Science does not deny the esistance of God - only certain definitions of it.

Think about it - energy exists, a scientific fact - and all leading theory now tries to combine relativity and quantum mechanics - thus creating the Grand Unified Field Theory. Right now science is searching for the essential energy, the indivisible force that connects everything in the universe from particles to planets.

Is this force not God? The question then becomes - is this force self-conscious - like we are - or is it an unconscious force that operates in a purly mechanical fashion. This question is harder to answer.

I think the fact that anything exists, that we can think and feel, is a kind of Mericle.

Ultimately I found my feelings on "god" summed up nicely be Albert Einstein in some of his autobiographical notes -

he said " 'God' is a force which maintains harmony in the universe, and is not concerned with the actions or fates of men."

I think that sometimes advances in science conflict with beliefs based on religion.
