Ignorance

" How can a person with no knowledge of the future understand the meaning of the present? If we do not know what future the present is leading us toward, how can we say whether this present is good or bad, whether it deserves our concurrence, or our suspicion, or our hatred?"
Milan Kundera
Are we really aware to what kind of future is our present leading us to??Or we just hate or love that present ignoring what kind of future we might be having tomorrow???

I don't think there's any good way of knowing what the future stores, but we all have an idea of what we want to happen... So the best we can do is act for the future we want to be the one that comes true. I think it's good to prepare for the worst while trying to obtain the best case scenario
anyways, I must say this: Milan Kundera is reaally cool The Unbearable Lightness of Being had such an impact on me...

Looking to the future

Ofcourse we can never predict how definitly the future can be like, but usually from the surrounding circumstances we can imagine how the future can be like..
I mean we have to look to the future as we think of the present,we can never look at the moment where we're living and never think about the next moment,it's just like being blind it's ignorance...
I will tell you about a personal experience,I might be too pessimistic but through those circumstances surrounding me,my entourage and the surrounding atmosphere here in Egypt I sometimes tell myself that tomorrow might be darker and especially when I deal with people who do not try to think about making a better tomorrow but just caring about living this moment no matter what may come next,it's actually driving me to more frustration...
Maybe the surrounding circumstances:the political and economical situations and people just accepting it as it is without even trying to express their rejection or even reluctance to such things...
And Yes Larissa,Milan Kundera is quite a cool guy...I loved his novel " Identity",it also touched me a lot..as I've been always asking myself that question who am I?and what is identity?is it somethign we are born with?or it's maybe something we gain due to our cutlure?surrounding environment?our traditions?
and does it have a relation with the place where we live or it's something that we may adopt???and why does it cause much confusion ????

Details of present circumstances give us a clue as to what the future will be, but none of us know for sure what the future entails. Faith, I believe, is required by every person, but it must not be used in vain.
I was a victim of a money scam not too long ago, and at the time, I believed the money affair to be real and true. I had faith that the future would bring me what I had been told by the person working the scam. Just because I had faith, though, didn't mean that the future turned out to be what I had expected and hoped for.
We have to believe something about the future, but we have to be careful and not be blind in our faith. Take into account every detail of the present circumstances, be wise, and although you will still not know the future, you will be better equipped to make decisions based on what the future is likely to be.

Hi Mary,
Thanks a lot for your input and you're absolutely right, the Ignorance of law excuses no one and it allows people to rape our rights and it creates those unfair situations that we might be suffering from now..

What about: "The future comes one day at a time" from the film bladerunner. Of course when it comes to our personal lives. Again from an individual perspective not ignorance but lack of courage make us think only of the future (that never comes because is always tomorrow), forget the past and avoid the present. You started by quoting Kundera, his book "The Identity" (l'identità in Italian at least) is about all this.
From a world facts and great issues perspective: understanding the past is just as important as knowing our present time which is as important as thinking medium and longer term and not just very short term. Time when making choices (even more if political and involve thousands of people and human lives) is fundamental in all it's facets: present, past, future.

The balance

Hi Alberto,
I always like to hear your opinions and perspectives and yes you're absolutely right about that, without an understanding of the past and the present we can never have that future, some of us are just content by dreaming of the future without even looking or understanding the present..There always has to be that balance between the past, present and the future..
But,sometimes we're just content about the past and we just avoid to judge the present or even think of the future...
And in that new year,I just decided to do my best to try to that balance between this 3 things: Past,Present and future even if the surrounding environment is not that encouraging..
I want a real new year,a positive one..
May all of you have a positive 2004...

i think that people are today more worried about the future than ever.we are running even when we are a sleep.i don't think that it can be a healthy attitude for mind, body and soul.
we are buying stuff and thinking if is it going to be fashionable next year even before wearing or using them.we are worried about money love health and we are even worried about our worryness.
when are we going to enjoy what is in our hands.

I believe we can control our future to a certain extent. If we control the present and make wise choices we should have a pretty good grasp on what our future is to be like. There are always uncontrollable variables. How we handle those variables when the time comes determines parts of our lives. I believe our future has already been mapped out by the hands of God. We have to control our present.

the future, being unknown, should pose to threat to the prsent, unless it has to do with results and consequences. like now, for example, i am a student. i know that my immediate future entails studying and being teachable. however, beyond that, do i know what long trem rewards i will obtain as a result? no, i do not. can i forsee what i will be, with specifics, in about forty years? no. i am able to generally determine what i want to be, but i cannot predict future circumstances.
because of this, only the general future has a effect on my present. consequences of actions, good or bad, and dreams of what i want to become should be the only factors concerning the future that will affect the present.
