"We regard this year’s good result as an acknowledgement that the Stockholm Challenge Award is on the right track.,” commented programme director Monica Berneström. “During the recent years’ turbulence in the IT industry, the competition has retained and further developed its good reputation as one of the most prestigious IT awards in the world."
A concentrated focus on regions from which participation was previously low has had results, with many projects coming from eastern Europe, South America and Africa. No less than 19 countries are completely new participating nations in the Stockholm Challenge: Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Moldova, Mongolia, Puerto Rico, Bolivia, Paraguay, Jamaica, the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, Botswana, Swaziland, Sudan, Samoa and Fiji are taking part for the first time in the competition, which is now being held for the sixth time.
As before, the Education category is the largest with 261 projects. Other large categories are e-Government with 131 projects, Health with 88, Culture with 83 and e-Business with 77. Smaller but no less important is the Environment category, with 54 entries this year.
The international jury assesses the projects based on four criteria: innovation, user benefit, transferability and accessibility. All the projects are judged within their own context, with the result that projects with different economic, cultural and social situations and environments can compete on the same terms. The competition rewards projects which, as well as being innovative and user focused, also have a major significance for local development and are sufficiently innovative that they can act as a model for other regions, cities and countries. User benefit is always the centre of attention!
This year’s finalists will be announced in January and the final event will occur in May 2004. Stockholm will then once again be the meeting place for some of the world’s most prominent IT entrepreneurs in a large-scale networking event – an unparalleled opportunity to establish contacts, exchange knowledge and receive inspiration! The programme includes seminars, an exhibition and other activities promoting the exchange of knowledge and experiences, and the high point is of course the magnificent award ceremony at the Stockholm City Hall.
