Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Riot
April 12, 2001 - 11:01 AM

Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) has been plagued with violence of unrest for the past few days. The violence erupted Monday in protest over the fatal shooting of an unarmed black youth, Timothy Thomas, 19, by a white officer, 26-year-old Steve Roach. It escalated into full-scale rioting on Tuesday night and has resulted in 76 arrests and more than 70 injuries during the first two nights. Looting, vandalism and arson were spreading into additional areas Wednesday night.

Wednesday night, myself and a friend were victims of these riots in those additional areas. Returning from a
birthday party, we exited I-71 at Dana Avenue. As we headed toward Norwood and my car, we approached garbage, glass and a crowd of rioters. A young black man, approximately 12-14 years old, shouted at us and threw several objects at the car. Sitting in the passenger's seat, it sounded as if a gun had gone off in my ear. Fortunately, it appeared to be three rocks. The first one hit the rear window. The second punctured a 3 inch hole in the rear door. The third came inches from my head, hitting the I-beam between the front and rear window.

We are both physically fine, however that evening will remain in our heads forever.

There's a good story about this on CNN:

Wow. I watched Remember the Titans on an airplane a few weeks ago, and continue to be constantly amazed and saddened at the racial tension that still continues to exist today, but can also appreciate that we've come a long way -- we have a lot farther to come.
