Regions that Could Benefit from Technology in the Classroom
Jul 8, 2013

It is know that having technology in the classroom not only engages students, but also enhances their learning experience. As a result people who have had technology in their education have greatly benefited.
I would like to be able to help people in developing nations by providing computers and tablets in classrooms. Under this I have included a copy of my idea and how I hope to accomplish it. smile
However I am currently looking for areas and regions of the world in which technology would have a great impact. I figured that since this community has intelligent people from all over the world, you may be able to help me select the regions that I will aim to help through my project. If you have a suggestion please comment.
You can also find my idea under "Gamers for Good". PS if you like my idea please support it by going to the page and clicking the vote button. This will help turn this dream into a reality, and help people in need all over the world. So here is my idea...
An exclusive line of video games, that part of the proceeds of sales eg $1 then an addition amount eg 10 cents could be donated for each badge or major achievement in the game. This could inspire gamers who are active in the gaming community, to also become active with helping others in the world.

Not only could this idea draw new people to gaming, but it could have a major real world impact. For example on the first day that Call of Duty Black Ops was released in the UK and North America sales totaled 5.6 million copies. So even if an amount as small as 10 cents was donated from a line of games, it could be very significant. Also this could help break down the barrier than many people have regarding the fact that they do not think that they can have an impact on the world. This could be a means of allowing people to pursue something that they love, and still positively impact the world.

The donations would go to a specific cause, for example increasing technology in class rooms in third world nations. This would go hand in hand with the concept of using video games because it is technology based. Technology in class room settings has been proven to interest and engage students more than just using paper based approaches. The use of technology would not only help the students visualize more, but it would also increase their quantity of education, therefore better preparing them for their futures.

The message could clearly be conveyed to the gamer through these of an online community. This could keep track of how much has been donated as a result of the gamers achievements and purchases. Also a summary of the funds donated on behalf of the members in their region, or their friends and opponents, could be shown. This could show people the impact that they have for a cause, and how they are contributing as a community. The donations could be shown not only in dollars and cents, but also in the amount of computers or tablets that have been donated. To allow the gamer even more choice and get them even more involved, if they had gotten enough to donate a piece of technology, they could choose what third world nation it would go to (from a list of options) and what piece of technology would be donated. It could almost be like upgrading a character in a video game, except it would be upgrading someones opportunities in the real world.

This idea could inspire people of all ages to participate in a global good!

I think that your idea is amazing and can go extremely far with all the games sold in first-world countries. It can definitely benefit those that you aim to help.

This is a good idea. We also need to work out how to put this into reality?

E.g. how to ensure the PC can be delivered into the people who need them? will you work alone or cooperate with NPO?

Another thing is how do you design and implement the game which will interest most people?

Hey first of all fantastic idea! A great resource you can use to track which countries need tablets and laptops would be www.khanacademy.org

Khan Academy is a free online education initiative with the goal of providing a world class education for anyone, anywhere. Khan Academy has thousands of short video lectures and exercises, and all students need to access them is tablet/laptop and an internet connection. It might be helpful to find what regions they're trying to reach, to help you find out which areas need this technology the most. Hope that helps!

I definitely agree there with Khanacademy. I have not heard of them until now, but what you said makes them sound like a great group to connect with.

And I would say that participating in the Sprout E-Course will help you tremendously in launching your idea; I just finished the last cycle and I found it EXTREMELY beneficial and helpful, especially with being placed with a facilitator who is there to support you and help you (of which I was placed with Sara Hassan and, as she already knows, could not complain about how AMAZING, supportive, and helpful she was throughout the entire 9 weeks).

I would also say that networking with individuals and companies in your area is also gonna be very helpful for you.

Thank you ShaneDabor that is a fantastic idea. smile I will definitely look at Khan Academy in the future. Thank you for taking an interest in my idea by the way, as I know that it will take more than one person to make this idea a reality. Also sorry to put this up here again, but if you would be so kind as to vote for 'Gamers for Good' it would be greatly appreciated. People can vote once a day. big grin Thanks and I hope to hear from you more in the future.

Thank you Katherine for your ideas and support. And I agree, the Sprout E-Course is incredible. Despite the fact that I am just starting it, I love it already. I have Sara as my facilitator too. smile It is great to hear from someone who has been through the course. Sorry for putting this up on this discussion yet again... but if you would be so kind as to vote for 'Gamers for Good' I would really appreciate it. You can vote once a day big grin. Thank you for your comments and support, and I hope to hear more from you in the future. smile

Thank you for your response Raymond Tang smile I hope to team up with other organizations in the future, in order to achieve my goals. I also hope to approach major companies that create games, with my idea to see if any are interested. As for how I am going to reach my goals, here is my approximate time line.

In three years I hope to see my idea in action. In order to attain this goal, I hope to begin working on my project now...

September 2013- By this time I hope to have spoke to 5 major video-game developing companies, and explained my idea. By speaking to people who have more experience in this field, I may be able to gain mentor ship, and a company to support my idea.

January 2014- I hope to have spoke to at least 2 game system companies, with platforms that could support 'Gamers for Good'.

March 2014- By this time I hope to have pinpointed 3 specific regions that could benefit from technology in their classrooms. I will have 2 pieces of affordable and reliable technology determined, that could be used.

June 2014- I hope to have at least one gaming company interested in my idea, and willing to allow a few games to be used for this. I feel that this may be attainable because only a small portion of the profits would be taken, it would give the company a reputation as being a good global citizen, and it may increase sales.

September 2014- By this time I hope to have an active website, and social media pages.

January 2015- By this time I hope to have a means of transporting the technology to the third world nations determined, as well as 10 000 people who have looked at the website and/or social media pages.

June 2015- By this time I hope to have advertisements in 2 gaming magazines.

September 2015- I hope to have the games and platform decided and finished.

November 2015- I hope to have my idea launch, in time for the holidays.

June 2016- I hope to have 5 games on the market.

This is just a rough idea, however I will further develop my timelines and goals as I go through the Sprout E-Course.

Thank you for your support and encouragement. Sorry to put this on here again... however I would really appreciate it is you would vote for my idea, you can vote once a day. big grin I hope to hear from you again soon...

Theresa

No problem! It really is; I sometimes look back on my experience from the cycle that just ended before your's and think "WOW! It is just amazing and incredible!" Yes, it something that is easy to fall in love with; it was exactly the same for me when I started. Oh My Gosh, that's SO great, awesome, and amazing; she is absolutely amazing and REALLY knows what she is doing. She knows that I couldn't have been asked to be placed with anyone better (among the four that were facilitators during my cycle: Sara, Kristle, Katie, and Denielle). It is always great hearing from former participants, but I guess especially so when the former participants is from the cycle that just finishes before you take it.

Hello everyone! Thank you for voting for my idea, Gamers for Good, so far! So far in the Sprout E-Course we have learned about making goals, that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely (SMART Goals).

One of my goals is to have 20 votes for Gamers for Good by Saturday.

I know that I cannot achieve this by myself but with your help I am sure I can . big grin Just like developing and idea, this will take more than one person. And you can vote once a day.

To reach this goal I only need about 5 votes a day... Can you help? smile

To vote go to Collaborate (At the top under Microsoft Innovate for Good), then Ideas. Now go to Seed funding Challenge 3. Gamers for Good is on I think the third page. You can't miss it, it has a picture of a mouse on an Xbox controller.

Thank you for your support. smile

Yup, exactly; really no way to really describe it, you hit the nail in the head. I absolutely did and honestly don't regret my participation, especially with working so closely with Sara in a facilitator-participant (or mentor-mentee, whatever you want to call it) relationship. It's absolutely amazing and unforgettable... also definitely talk to and interact with the other facilitators than Sara; they all have a wealth of knowledge in such diverse areas that can help (and they don't bite). Definitely; if you have any questions, shoot them my way and I would love to help if possible and if I can't help, I can try to direct you in the right direction with those who can. The easiest way to send me questions might be thru the TakingITGlobal message board/system; feel free to check it out and talk to any of the facilitators about that end because they know more about it than I can really tell you.
