Is the Media really honest?
December 12, 2003 - 09:17 AM

Some say to be a sucessful journalist, you have to live on half-truths sometimes. Hmm..........I wonder

We are always bombarded with news, issues, current affairs everyday. But do such news really contain 100% truth?

If not, why not? I do listen to news on the media often and believe me I have come to realise when a particular issue is being completely truthful or not as reported by the media house. Of course I am not 100% good at this for I have to listen to different versions of the news before knowing what is true or not.

I remember I was in a particular gathering where there was the editor of a popular news magazine who also attended the event and someone asked him that why is the media so full of bad news. Is it that bad things happen more than good things all the time? And the editor said not really so but we have come to realise that no news sells like bad news.

It is a well known fact that the media is a very powerful tool and should be used cautiously in order not to mis-direct people. The media has played prominent roles in the lives of people and would continue to do so. However the media should always try to stand for intergrity, honesty and truth

on top of the facts - which might not be 100% accurate all the times, I agree - media shows oppinions. and oppinions varies. there's no such thing as neutral media.

sure it is all a matter of perspective really. The camera is a funny tool - it can, at times demonstraite truth more clearly than 1000 words - the picture of hunger on another thread is an example of this.

But it can also construct illusions - the entire film industry is based on this concept - outside of the image of two beautiful people kissing there is a grip standing next to a light scratching himself and eating a donut.

The camera gets to choose what it sees.

At the same time - if you listen to multiple sources you will usually be able to interpret truth.

Also have a bit of faith. I think most Journalists are aiming for truth - though it will always be interpreted through the prysm of their own experiences.

It is a privilege to have access to diverse sources and different reports on the same issue.

Such quick access to diversity, by means of the new information and communication technology makes you aware of others' different views and opinions. This way you have grounds to answer back, to refute, and express your own views.

It is an opportunity to reach out to others and explain your viewpoints.

Different views open debate and dialogue, and it is up to you to get an objective conclusion out of all this diversity.

hello,

This is a good topic.

Anyway this is where "professionalism and patriotism"comes in.There are some time when you really need to keep some information better still hide some truth in other not to compound the problem at hand .

media en mass

The thing is that mass media is a product these days. It's not just news, it's something that's sold. You can't trust that the news is 100% correct because there are always laws and political interests which keep certain details under covers. You'll notice that a lot of the people who own newspapers also own radio stations and TV stations as well, so they have a large ability to feed viewers the information it wants to feed them, insite certain ideals, or feelings, or certain awarenesses in comparison to others.

In some ways it just feels like it's another form of marketing. Trying to sell you one idea over another idea without giving you the full picture. I'm sure there can be a great difference between the stories told by people involved, by people who were watching, and then by media's interpretation. Some people will buy a certain newspaper because the views are inline with their own views, so the paper then writes to cater to that audience. You'd have to then expect some level of biased thought.

It's nice to know what's going on, but it's a difficult thing to say that what you're told is 100% true, even if it's "technically and from certain viewpoints" true.
