Citizenship
May 24, 2013

The recent events have once again stirred a debate in my head with regards to the meaning of the term 'citizenship'. What exactly do we mean by citizenship?

Is it limited to holding a passport or is it more than that?
One can read a lot said about 'responsible citizenship', but how does one go about ensuring the same in a huge country like India with mind boggling diversities?
What is the responsibility of a nation towards the same?
How does the state/country ensure that every child grows up to be a decent citizen of the country as well as the world or more generally a decent human being?

Are there any concrete steps to ensure 'responsible citizenship'?

Question 1: What exactly do we mean by citizenship?
Answer: as described in dictionaries;
a- The status or condition of a citizen.
b- The duties, rights, and privileges of this status.
c- A person’s conduct as a citizen.
So there are few meanings for citizenship and seem to be integrated.

Question 2: Is it limited to holding a passport or is it more than that?
Answer: It is obviously more than holding a passport.

Question 3: One can read a lot said about 'responsible citizenship', but how does one go about ensuring the same in a huge country like India with mind boggling diversities?
Answer: So we see and recognize what a big job the Late Mr. Mahatma Gandhi and his allies did long time ago. Yes, a country like India is very hard to rule and describing the responsible citizen more difficult comparing with many countries.

Question 4: What is the responsibility of a nation towards the same?
Answer: A nation is to define the responsible citizen by laws and implement the laws.

Question 5: How does the state/country ensure that every child grows up to be a decent citizen of the country as well as the world or more generally a decent human being?
Answer: Governments are responsible for tainting and education of children and also the kind of behavior done on them by the families and the society.

Question 6: Are there any concrete steps to ensure 'responsible citizenship'?
Answer: Yes. By implementing the laws and regulations.

Have you heard of the term 'citizenship education'. What do you think about it?
Are there any examples of the same from your country?

I would say that briefly it is about “enabling people to make their own decisions and to take responsibility for their own lives and their communities".

I believe it shall be put in the training curriculum and as I am aware it is part of training in our country. My criticism is that the quality of training shall largely be increased.

Answer:
All of us need to have citizenship education so that we could be responsible citizens.
Yes, there are courses in our upper elementary and high schools about citizenship education.

Dear Farhad,

Thank you once again for your response. Once again, what kind of citizenship education are you referring to? Can you be more specific.
And what kind of effect they do have on students?

Dear Anu,
There are courses on the duties of citizens and government both individually and towards each other mostly covered in social science classes in all levels.
It is believed that these courses are effective elements in increased youth participation in elections.

Within capitalism responsibility is negated because workers are forced to compete for jobs countries are forced to expand their markets morality goes out the window.people do what they have to do within a production for profit society but within a production for use society there would be no problem to being a responsible citizen.

According to Will Durant, pre-history communism made people dissatisfied. Some worked hard and some kept on laziness while production was divided evenly.

Yes, capitalism does not necessarily contain freedom, justice and logical distribution of wealth (although it seems capitalism only carries freedom and justice), but so far it has attracted more attention. Social democracy seems to be closer to your point of view. Do you agree?
