May 17th - International Day against Homophobia & Transphobia
May 16, 2012

May 17th is the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia (IDAHO). Homophobia and Transphobia affect youth around the world, and according to civil rights leader Coretta Scott King, "Seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood." What does it feel like to experience homophobia and/or transphobia? Check out this video by LGBT Youthline, and add to the discussion here.

What struck me most about the Youthline video was the portion illustrating having to choose pieces of yourself in order to feel safe. Homophobia has perhaps the unique effect of not allowing people to feel safe inhabiting their whole and true selves. It must be crippling to feel the constraint of being less than yourself, as a consequence of the pervasive presence of even the slightest homophobic sentiments, and something many of us could not begin to imagine...

I feel people who are the victim of homophobia and transphobia should come ahead to make a social group where they will be able to share their fear, feelings, emotion. Then they would not feel insecure and unsafe. Mostly they will not be alone so far. I hope people will not be judgmental to accept them with any orientation.smile

The presence of homophobia & transphobia is heartbreaking. A person should never feel like less of a person than another because of who they are. The gay rights movement is slowly seeing progress but I hope to see the disappearance of homophobia & transphobia very soon.

Saying someone's marriage is against your religion is like being mad at someone for eating a cupcake because you're on a diet. I don't see how they can instantly disown human beings because the people they love are of the same gender. That is the only difference. They are still human - you can not help whom you love. If you don't like gay marriage, don't get gay married.

The video is a very accurate presentation of how it feels to be discriminated against for being "different". I think videos like these should be more public for more people to see. I don't know if these types of videos air on television in Canada but down here in Florida I do not see much videos advocating a bully free environment. We should spread more awareness of this through social media. That way more people will become aware and even get people thinking.

I really think its high time the world should focus on Africa where the incidence of homophobia is highest. The lynching and jungle justice won't stop until the whole world stands up and take appropriate action. I believe if the same effort given to eradication of poverty and fighting epidemics is given to the issue of homophobia, Africa will be a better place.
