How do you stop people from littering and fly-tipping

What can the council/ community do to stop people littering? Even if there are bins available people
still drop litter on the pavement or in a bush!
Also in a field near my house, people drop huge amounts of waste - fly tipping/dumping instead of
taking it to a proper dump.
Do the threat of fines really work?

Make an example of those that are caught as its not that expensive to get bulk items taken away

The next time You see anyone doing the same give a good lecture about the ill effects of such
dumping. About littering, that is a big problem, people need to understand that bins are kept for
usage. This is more of a personality problem, people who know whats wrong and right would not do
that, however, awareness is what can help. So awareness should be started at different forums to
curb this menace.

Good ideas! I agree people need to be educated more from a young age about the disadvantages of
dropping litter.
Do you think it is mostly young people and young adults who are guilty?

Its a serious issue here in Abuja Nigeria where even the toughest measures seems to be in place but
people fling rubbish out of cars and even drop stuffs by the road side around major busstops despite
the fact that there are waste bins and waste bags.I suggest that world governments individually
tighten laws on dumping and littering.

Yes mostly its the young adults, its like sometimes we tend to think its ok, doesn't matter. I am
sure at some point of time even we have done it but then thankfully we have realized its not the
way. So here ya what needs to be done is young adults usually in schools need to be talked to about
it.
