Chen GuangCheng in US Embassy?
Apr 29, 2012
|
|
The heroic blind human rights activist Chen GuangCheng is rumored to be hiding in the US Embassy in
Beijing. Blinded by an illness at an early age, Chen taught himself enough law to file a lawsuit on
behalf of women who were victims of their local prefecture government's draconian and illegal
methods while enforcing China's one child policy. The women had been forced to undergo abortions and
sterilizations. Chen was arrested for his efforts and spent four years and three months in a
political prison for "damaging property and organizing a mob." After finishing his sentence in 2010,
he was kept under house arrest and watched by government thugs who have regularly stormed his house
to beat him and his family. Actor Christian Bale's attempt in December 2011 to visit Chen was
thwarted by the same thugs who roughed up Bale and his camera crew and then chased his car for 40
minutes (see video footage on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-NGweWIQqc). Now Chen has
made a daring escape and the Chinese authorities are searching house to house to recapture him. He
is rumored to be holed up in the US Embassy. US officials have not confirmed the rumor, and Chen's
international supporters are worried the USA is pressuring him to return to his home arrest to avoid
creating another incident which might worsen US-China relations. I think it is time we all put human
rights before economic interests, don't you? I say boycott all Made in China products!!! What do you
say?

That's a great idea! It might be tough considering a significant amount of products sold in Canada
are made in china, but I'll make the effort! I've been reading about Chen and his activism! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for commenting, Kathryn. Yes, I know it's tough to avoid Made in China products. But every
day brings new examples of the very negative role China plays in world human rights issues. They
don't just persecute their own citizens. They and Russia are the fiercest defenders of the Hassad
government in Syria which has murdered over 9,000 of its citizens through bombing, shelling and
sniper fire. It is China who props up possibly the worst human rights violator in the world today,
the regime in North Korea. Besides creating an international crisis every month, the North Koreans
routinely imprison family and relatives of political prisoners because of a "guilt by association"
policy. Defectors who flee famine in North Korea are routinely rounded up by China and sent back,
where they are summarily executed. I don't want my dollars going to such a country that commits,
aids and abets so many human rights violations. Does anyone still remember Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel
Peace Prize winner? Yes, he's still sitting in a Chinese jail.
