Racial perspectives

Hi,
I would like to open a discussion on the issue of race. As much as we like to think that racism is long gone or on it's way to exit, I think it is still around in someways.
I had an incident that had, in a way, helped me thinking about what racism really is, what causes or motivates it and what effects it can have in a society. Again, when we dig deep into this subject, it will take us right back into historical times but, in this modern times, I think it's really interesting the way we see racism evolves from one form to another, across cultures and even within the same race. Personally, it's been fascinating trying to understand what it really is, how do I deal with the issue, what do I say, what do I not say, the law around what's appropriate and etc.
I had some racial attack for being who I am and got called names and labeling on the basis of my racial background. I did nothing or said anything to respond to the insulting email messages but thought keeping quiet might help settle the tension that was motivated by a miss understanding (I think).
I would like to know what others in the forum think on this issue.
I really don't care what color your skin is, as long as you're a human being? that's what I care about!
I see you as a living being, another form of me-self. I guess this is my view, we all have different views and experiences but I'd like to know what you think and what reasons motivates what your beliefs are for this subject.
