Is Mental Illness a Stigma in your Culture?

I recently was shocked at a strong reaction I received when I compared a certain cultural behavior to a mental illness. This led me to wonder whether mental illness is viewed more negatively in certain cultures than in others.
Mental illness can range from momentary depression, manic behaviors, and suicidal thoughts all the way to chemical imbalances such as schizophrenia. In the West, mental illness is viewed as other illnesses which can be treated medically. Many Americans take pharmaceutical drugs to help them get through the day. The mental health industry is well-developed, and many people speak openly of their "therapy" or "therapists."
How is mental illness viewed in your culture? Is it something people are ashamed of and hide from others? Do people think you are possessed by an evil spirit? What do people do in your culture when they suffer from depression or other mental illness?

Technically in Nigeria it is a stigma because people from the family that have such person usually finds it difficult to marry or get married as the prospective suitor will be afraid of having a child with mental problem. Even some people do go as far as accusing the victims parents of using the child for money rituals in the case this issue involves a rich parents or family. Infact there are many dimension to the stigma as per mental illness in Nigeria

I don't think people in America or Europe automatically assume the parents of the mentally ill person are at fault. Like so many things, mental illness may have either genetic or environmental causes. I can imagine there are severe stresses which might make anyone "crack", no matter how "normal" their parents are.
I am not sure what you mean by "money rituals". Could you elaborate?

In my country people dont really talk about their issues.I think there is small dose of shame, maybe those people are afraid of beeing stigmatised. It is very sad that we dont believe to each other, and people must realize that you have to talk about it that we can help you.

Thank you, Ivan. I agree that mental illness is often hidden out of shame. I think some countries are better than others at identifying and encouraging the mentally ill to seek help. I think the degree of shame plays an important role.

It is true that shame plays big role in identifying mental illness, but sometimes family doesnt want to know if their member of family is mental ill,its very sad truth.

Here from where I come from mental illness is not something what you call a taboo. Just like any other illness, the condition is considered treatable whereby there are hospitals, mental institutions offering medical and professional help and that includes societies and some charitable organization devoted to assisting people with the condition. Nowadays, it is a common thing caused depression especially those related to financial difficulties, family relationship, peer pressure and most notorious, work stress, so in reality there is really nothing to hide on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- aquarium fish | bekko koi

Thanks for your comment, Mandy. Am I right in assuming you are from the Chinese community in Malaysia? Does the Muslim community also share your attitude to mental illness?
