Are we really going to the world of 7 billion people?

UN, with its population council, UNFPA, is now promoting the 7 billion people campaign.
The report tells us about how young people's role is needed to keep this phenomenon on track, so all those good implications can be sustained and those bad implications can be tackled.
What do you think about this issue, are we really going to 7 billion? And what do you think about the role of youth in this issue?

7 billion is alot of people on one little planet, but in our times we cannot cut that number in half unless a massacre occurs, even if we are tearing down our planet.
What I believe we can do is help solve the financial gap between the richest or rich and the poorest of poor. I mean look what happened after WWI and WWII in North America, all the families are now having 1-2 kids instead of 4-8. So increasing the quality of life of a family will help slow down the population acceleration in Africa, India and China. A more wealthy families means more support in the future which means less reason to have over a dozen kids.

I thought we were already at 7 billion and going on 9 billion by 2050! This population growth is unavoidable as Hattie said. While it is true that families in wealthier societies have fewer children, those wealthier families consume an incredible amount of resources compared to families in the poorer countries. Chinese and Indians aspire to become wasteful consumers like the Americans (and Europeans and Japanese). This pressure on world resources and the environment will be too much. Something has gotta give! The only answer is the wealthier countries have to start consuming less as the poorer countries consume more. Is that going to happen? Naaaaaah! Dream on. The world is already resorting to the dirtiest sources of energy like oil tar sands, gas fracking and deep-sea oil drilling. And the climate gets hotter and hotter. Boy, I'm glad I will be dead in 2050. Sorry about the mess we left you young ones.

Yes, yes we are. We officially hit 7 billion a few months ago.
