International Human Right Commission
Distinguished Delegates of States Parties to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights
Young Human Right Activist both in the Gambia and Abroad
Members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps.
Representatives of National Human rights Institutions and Civil Society Organizations.
ALL HUMAN BEING,
Hon Chairperson
The theme for the 50th Ordinary session is ‘Current Challenges and Future Opportunities in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in Africa’.
The Member States of the Organization of African Unity hereinafter referred to as the OAU, States Parties to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights: Considering that the Charter of the Organization of African Unity recognizes that freedom, equality, justice, peace and dignity are essential objectives for the achievement of the legitimate aspirations of the African peoples;
The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights reaffirms adherence to the principles of human and peoples' rights, freedoms and duties contained in the declarations, conventions and other instruments adopted by the Organization of African Unity, and other international organizations;
Recognizing that the twofold objective of the African Charter on Human and Peoples'
Rights is to ensure on the one hand promotion and on the other protection of human and
peoples' rights, freedoms and duties;
Recognizing further, the efforts of the African Commission on Human and Peoples'
Rights in the promotion and protection of human and peoples' rights since its inception in
1987;
The challenges in relation to human rights around Africa are immense and often personally overwhelming. As you learn more about the issues, it can be a bit frustrating to work out how, as an individual in this complex world, you can have a positive impact and effect change. There are many ways to make change and one of them is to understand that small steps can make an incredible difference.
As a young human right defender I believe that international standards of human rights apply to all people equally, and that sharp vigilance and timely protest can prevent the tragedies of the twentieth century from recurring. At Human Rights organization we remain convinced that progress can be made when people of good will organize themselves to make it happen.
The revolutions and mass protests around the region demanding the promotion of human rights values, dignity, democracy and the rule of law are consistently being challenged by factors that include decades-long legacies of oppression and corruption. The factors also include lack of political will by countries, direct violence and unprecedented brutality that are challenging the realization of the very reason behind the instigations of such uprisings.
Hon Chairperson
In Africa the situations remain worrying concern, as in the period between 2006 to date, violations of human rights ranged from extrajudicial killings, torture, forced displacements, violations of freedom of expression, and association and assembly remain a concern.
We need to work towards a global culture of non violence, good governance and youth empowerment especially youth representation at ordinary session.
I urge the African governments to adhere to the principles of the international Human Rights instruments for the benefit of all Africans at large. 30 years after the charter has been adopted, Africans are still experiencing various forms of human rights abuses and violations in the continent. The charter is a set of guaranteed rights for all human beings.
Finally, I wish to urge all readers to participate fully in the deliberations to follow because everyone’s contribution is indeed very important toward ensuring the effective promotion and protection of human and peoples’ rights in Africa
I thank you all
