China vetoes UN sanctions against Syria

Will ironies never cease?
According to the United Nations Human Rights Office, the Syrian government has already murdered 2,900 Syrian civilians in its effort to clamp down on the Syrian pro-democracy protests that have coincided with pro-democracy movements in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Libya.
The Damascus Center for Human Rights Studies has documented 183 cases of CHILDREN being murdered.
But when the UN Security Council moved to impose mild sanctions on the Syrian government for its murderous behavior, China (and Russia) vetoed the resolution.
China cited "non-interference in the internal affairs" of Syria for its veto.
Now let's shift to South Africa. When Archbishop Desmond Tutu wanted to invite the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner the Dalai Lama to Tutu's 80th BIRTHDAY PARTY, China kicked up a hissy fit, leading the South African government to deny the Dalai Lama an entry visa for South Africa.
So which is it, China? Non-interference or interference? Non-interference appears to be only for regimes that resemble the Chinese government. I guess interfering in democracies is okay.

A very good point!
However, I think that both of these decisions are in fact consistent with the rest of China's policies.
First, they protect Syria's right to suppress its own people because that is in agreement with the Chinese ideology.
Second, China wants in on Syrian oil. over 90% of Syrian oil exports go to European nations. But if the EU places sanctions, then a new buyer can come in and fill the place for that trading partnership. China greatly desires this, as their need for imported oil has increased 5% every year for the past few years and they need more trading partners.
In regards to the decision about the Dalai Lama, I do believe they oppose everything he does, no matter what. Simply because he speaks out against China occupying Tibet, and since China considers Tibet to be a part of its nation, they consider the Dalai Lama a citizen of China. And citizens of China are not allowed to speak out against the government. So they oppose him doing almost anything.

You're right on every point, Connor. Those are the real reasons for the Chinese behavior. I am very happy the Oslo people have so carefully given out Nobel Peace Prizes! Desmond Tutu has one, the Dalai Lama, President Obama, and now Liu Xiaobo. It seems everywhere the Chinese government turns, it's confronted with someone who has a Nobel Peace Prize! The party hacks in Beijing must be feeling really left out.

China is always controversial whenever it comes to issues of middle east because they usually sees such interference as something that could affect their trade advancement in the region. Besides they usually want to be seeing as United States of the middle east

I think the Chinese are very shortsighted if they think they can keep access to Middle East resources by propping up oppressive dictatorships. I read that China's name is "mud" in Libya now because the Libyan people are very angry with Chinese and Russian support for Qaddaffi.
How do things stand in Africa, in Nigeria? Do the Chinese enjoy a good reputation there? I have been following some blogs in Zambia where the Chinese have a very big presence in the copper industry. Despite helping the Zambian people with many free infrastructure projects, the Chinese have still managed to get on the wrong side of the Zambian people. The Zambians are angry with some of the Chinese company labor practices and feel the Chinese are their new colonial masters. The new president of Zambia Michael Sata made Chinese exploitation of Zambia a major campaign point and won the election.

hi Prieten,
in Nigeria of today, no one says any good thing about china....home of fakers. Almost all the bad products we have in the country were all imported from china including drugs to show how rutress most of their manufacturers are. so china is known for hurting other countries through their trade by not putting check and effective monitoring on things leaving their shores like other countries

Here in Japan, the people were first shocked when a number of Japanese were sickened from eating Chinese-made imported dumplings. Then they were angered after the Chinese government, apparently without even investigating, declared the dumplings must have been poisoned in Japan. Then, many months later the Chinese quietly said they had identified an unhappy employee at the dumpling factory who had confessed to putting in some chemical fertilizer. But the real sufferers from these lax controls are the Chinese themselves. A big scandal was the watered down milk which the Chinese dairies then "spiked" with a chemical to make it appear normal. Many Chinese babies became seriously ill. I hope this is a short-term phenomenon. I can remember back in the 1960's when Japanese products were considered cheap and shoddy in the USA. About a decade later, Americans were flocking to Japan to see how Japan made such excellent quality products. Books like "Japan as Number One" were bestsellers, and we Americans thought Japan would "bury" us economically. Can China can pull off the same feat?
