Can charity or voulonteering work be unselfish? Why do people do it?
September 14, 2011 - 10:03 AM

I've been thinking a lot about this topic. I've joined TIG 5 years ago with an intention to get more involved in Human Rights, but at that time I was too occupied by my studies and another NGOs that unfortunately I didn't manage to involve in a way that could show some significant results. I joined TIG for a simple reason, to learn more about what's happening around us and to find my own ways to help in the process of making this world a better place...

I was always wondering why some people dedicate their whole lives to helping others? Is it coz of winning the peace prices? Is it for their personal satisfaction or to make their neighbors talk about them?

If I look back to 2005 when I joined TIG for the first time...yes, I wanted to do a positive change, but also, I wanted my friends to see what I'm doing and to involve themselves too, I wanted to make something big, and of course, I failed...
Now, I'm having a completely different thoughts and feelings about re-joining again..maybe I'm older and smarter now, maybe now is my time to so something..it doesn't need to be big..actually, now i know that the smallest thing that a person unselfishly does can bring a change and can create a small new road, which will certainly then be followed...
What are your reasons to do it? And is there selfishness in every person that is volunteering or doing a charity work? Is it even bad to be a little bit selfish?
Interested in your opinion... smile

Charity for social cause is really a great support for the needy people. Charity must to be done without any self interest or lust. it should be for the society, for the people, for the country, for the world. Every person has to think in this way to keep the real meaning of charity alive.

Charity work and volunteering can absolutely be unselfish. I would imagine most people who volunteer or take part in various charities, do it just for the simple fact that they like to help others in need or want to make the world a better place. Although I can see why someone would think charity and volunteering can be selfish. I know these is people out there who don't volunteer or take part in charity because they want to, it's because they do it to make themselves look better and to put on a resume. But in the end they're still dedicating their time to a charity or volunteer service, so therefore the people in need are still getting help that they need which is all that matters in my mind.

General local and global issues: to what extent it is so acute the need to discuss and inform about them ?

The most important issue in our world that is also a major constituent of our modernity, is basic human rights or: respect for the human person.
But we shouldn't get in error: apart from what is usually known, such as violations and oppressions, there can be on one hand neglects and malpractices ( criminal neglect ). On the second hand there can be non-access to basic human rights due to neediness ( health, housing...) or illiteracy ( job, vote...). Furthermore, focus is not done the same for personal and cultural rights as for political ones ( considered even sometimes in a narrow point of view ).

As for the countries, and our whole planet, a big concern is wealth management: shouldn't be considered as a basic human right, the necessity of a safe environment, I mean: cleanliness of nature, conservation of ecosystems balance, protection of either renewable and non renewable resources !?
Another concern that is mostly an observation: there is a big difference between talking about problems and doing one's best to help resolve them. It is on the field commitment, when possible, that shows who lover really our planet.

And the last big question is: does the most powerful powers of our societies, government and media, have word of these concerns and issues?
:-)

Sorry to re-post ! Another imprtant perspective :
from my article
http://journal-ho-net.fr.gd/Precisions-about-homeless-phenomenon.htm
A precision is required so that the discussion of the problem of homeless (and other socially excluded) does not seem like what life is sometimes: a picture of fatigue and distress that suggests to listeners ‘ the speaker is just sad or exaggerating’

The homeless phenomenon leads us to deal with 6 issues:

*The distress of those people who do not have access to safe food, drinkable water, shelter and hygiene. These cause skin and digestive infections. Outdoor life without enough warm clothing causes respiratory illnesses. Prolonged illness without treatment can cause epidemics and selection of resistant microbes.

Untreated chronic diseases can cause in addition apparent disturbed behaviour which may be thought to be mental disorder.

Distress and prolonged pain can lead to real mental disorder.

So we must not save the homeless ?

*The indifference of most social parties to this distress. They say not specialized , or even dealing with higher concerns.

So must we not ensure this indifference is over especially in associations ?

* We know that in the past plague and other epidemics started in poor populations.

Dangerous diseases in late 20th century (like smallpox etc ) were eradicated when wide vaccination campaigns took place, and poor people benefited from them.

So, for government, it is CHEAPER to provide for the health of the homeless than to treat an epidemic outbreak ?

* Those homeless people, because of neediness may become bad tools in the hands of potents, enrolled as thieves, killers etc. Or even to transmit their illnesses to others.

So we must we not prevent this ?

*If there is one third of population who are needy (one tenth of them are homeless), and another third businessmen ( most of them multidisciplinary ) it remains only one third of consumers , which is not enough to maintain a flourishing economy.

* In addition: the impact of this distress coupled with indifference.

Impact on the morale of adults.

Ordinary people think: this is the fate of those who are not obedient and desirable in society; they rot and no one is watching.

Impact on the education of young people growing up seeing that one can be a good citizen and remain indifferent.

Impact on the potentates who thus govern by fear generated through the distress and the indifference towards it.

So ? Secondary issue ?
