Global Dignity Day 2011

What does dignity mean to you?
Why is global dignity important?
On October 20th, 2011, youth in schools around the world will participate in Global Dignity Day; a day to honour our interconnectedness and the intrinsic value of each individual.
Through the sharing of personal stories and cooperative activities, youth will powerfully experience how they themselves, through even the smallest acts of kindness, can contribute to a more peaceful world.
Check out the event details here!

To me, dignity means being able to live a decent life; to have access to the basic needs such as shelter, food, healthcare and education so that we are able to cultivate kindness and compassion for others.
I believe global dignity is important because it is inversely related to suffering. This means that the more people that are able to live a dignified life, the less suffering and conflict there will be in the world.
In order for global dignity to spread, I believe that we also need a strong understanding of our interconnectedness. This means that our thoughts and actions affect humanity as a whole, and that everyone else's thoughts and actions also affect us.
For example, if we were to help just 1 child so that they could live a dignified and happy life, that child will grow up to contribute positively to our world. On the surface it seems as though we are only helping 1 person, but in actuality we are helping humanity as a whole over time.
However, this would only happen if the child understood that they were interconnected with everyone else. Many people who have shelter, food, healthcare and education still live in ways that steal dignity away from others because they don't realize that preventing others from living with dignity means diminishing their own dignity as well.
