UK Riots
August 10, 2011 - 02:37 AM
|
|
Over the weekend and the first days of this week, London as well as some of the biggest cities in the country - Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol and there are reports of sporadic trouble in other English cities including Liverpool, Leicester and Notthingham where a police station was firebombed.
The riots begun after the police allegedly killed a young man called Mark Duggan. There has been no evidence yet that Mark opened fire at the police.
Obviously, someone's death is no justification to start up such a series of attacks. Rioters are mostly youngsters, breaking into shops, stealing, setting buildings and cars in fire, causing absolute chaos, with total disregard of the law and of how their actions are affecting the lives of the others. Local businesses suffered immense damage, and of course the damages caused to the public domain will have to be covered with tax payers money, something that the country does not need in the middle of recession.
Police are absolutely powerless. The human rights prevent them from threatening with opening fire, from throwing tear gas or from using any kind of force. All they can do is watch these hundreds of kids lay siege to the country.
What do you think about this? Do you think the police should be able to do more?

When you give the police more power, you end up with a police state.
illegal searches, wiretaps, police brutality and abuse of power are all too common in the USA...
Better to give misdirected youths more educational opportunities, job training and social activism so they can become invested members of society...
Right now they feel like outsiders with no future in a dying economy.
Governments are notorious for spending too much of our tax dollars on weapons and security, and too little on education and job training.

Obviously what you say is true. But it is beside the point. The whole point of the discussion was to see peoples opinion on the riot itself and they think the police should do in response to this widespread rioting. You do have a point that Violence should not be fought with violence. But the big problem they are facing right now, is if they can not do anything the riots will keep going unchecked and it might turn into a catastrophe. Finally the police should tell the public what did really happen. If it is true and the killing was unjustified the policeman in question should be brought to a tribunal and judge under the court of law.

Hi Adrian Lachance
I think you are mistaken, The whole point of the discussion is clearly stated at the end of Lavinia's remarks.
The Author/Lavinia asks the question ;
"Do you think the police should be able to do more?"
I answered her question and gave reasons why I think it is a bad idea to give the police more power - to do more.
That my friend IS the whole point of the discussion.... To answer questions and give opinions...

You missed the point again Grand Inquisitor - you were supposed to AGREE with the op
Seriously though I completely agree with your point of view - increased police powers will eventually land us with martial law.
I must say it's refreshing to hear liberal views from someone from the USA. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canvas Prints

Sadly the riots spread because the police actually stood back and did nothing. The mobs realised that they could get away with bad behavior.
The guy that was shot was a known felon who had been to pick up his gun, it was found beside him.
There was a load of BS talked about the cause of the riots, bottom line was that a number of thugs decided to get some stuff for free.
A Sony warehouse/office burned, putting 750 people out of work over night. Shops burnt leaving people homeless with only the clothes they stood up in.
Then the looters pose with their ill gotten gains on Facebook, what a society we have become. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jo Devizes knows a womens website that is rather good.

Jo, I see your point and I feel your anger and frustration. I agree with your sentiments..
Vandals and thugs surround us, no matter what lofty social circles we travel in. Our governments and the Bankers who control them, have stolen Trillions of dollars because of their greed and warmongering.
They have not been held accountable for their deeds... We need Laws with sharp teeth that punish those who steal big as well as those who steal small.
