[Poll] What should a consumer believe?

I've always been skeptical about the idea of “Fair Trade” coffee (or any goods for that matter). Is it really helping farmers or is it just a clever marketing ploy used as an excuse to charge consumers more? Some people say it benefits farmers, some say it doesn't. What should a consumer believe?
I sincerely hope that my efforts to make responsible decisions, purchasing “Fair Trade” products for example, are not in actuality making matters worse.
Does buying "Fair Trade" products actually benefit the producers/farmers? I'd appreciate any comments you could leave about why you think 'yes' or 'no' because I'm so confused about this issue!
