Peace Building at the Global Youth Village
Mar 18, 2011

This summer at the Global Youth Village (GYV), in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in
Virginia, teens from all over the world will gather once again to get hands-on training on peace
building. They will be challenged to answer questions like "What is the difference between dialogue
and debate?" "How do you develop good listening skills?" "What is the real definition of respect?"
In 2011, young people from Iraq, Indonesia, Nigeria, France and a very diverse population of
American youth (including youth from Native American reservations) will recieve valuable training in
intercultural communication and peace building. Participants are exposed to the customs, traditions
and hardships of their peers around the world. By engaging in dynamic workshops, they are encouraged
to focus on universal human values with the goal of creating common ground upon which they will
build peaceful future.
After a summer at GYV, an American participant said, "I heard the songs and languages, tasted and
smelled foods and learned about he customs and ceremonies of people from many lands. I painted
landscapes, built a hiking trail, and scaled a rock face. Since coming to the Global Youth Village,
I feel comfortable with unfamiliar beliefs, ideas and people."
Understanding is a key, first step towards peace. We hope that some young TIG members will join us
this summer for what is sure to be a life-changing experience!
