GIS Mapping Specialists - A thread to share articles, technologies, datasets, etc.
Mar 13, 2011

I'm a bit new to TIG, but I know there are at least a few of us GIS folks on here. Why not use this thread to allow us to share information with one another? I'd be very interested to hear how everyone is using their GIS backgrounds in projects with an environmental leaning.

Some relatively recent news clippings of great interest:

1) "Brazil to launch new deforestation monitoring system that 'sees' through clouds"

2) A new high-resol ution mapping method that will have a major impact on the implementation of REDD in tropical regions around the world

For those that would like to learn GIS, at this link you can download a trial version of ArcMap 10 - the industry standard for most GIS applications. There are all sorts of free tutorials on the web to get you started. Feel free to shoot me a private message if you have any questions!

Good on you Steve.

That's a great thread! at least for me. I'm not really a GIS person but more in the sensor and scientific side of geospatial technologies. I'm engineer in Remote-sensing and image processing.
I've worked a few years for a French research organization in French Guiana, near the Amazon border and I was involved in projects related to illegal fishing, illegal gold mining and deforestation in the Amazon basin.

In French Guiana, we have a lots of illegal vessels coming from Brazil and I was involved in a French and European projects to develop methodology for detection and identification of illegal fishing boats using optical and Radar satellites. My work led to the installation of a Satellite receiving ground-station for optical and Radar satellite and an the development of an operational monitoring system.

In the deforestation side, we used Rarar satellites such as ALOS PALSAR to develop methodologies to identify clearings in the forest.

We also used a combination of high resolution optical satellites and radar satellites to detect illegal gold mining site and open pits. This is a very tricky problem as most of illegal sites are under the canopy and are not very big.

SarVision is a remote-sensing company involved in geospatial applications related to environmnetal monitoring andd natural ressources management.

Here is an impressive list of there projects in Indonesia.

That is impressive! Thanks Fabrice. For those looking to get a sense of the types of practical applications that GIS can have to help us monitor, understand, and ultimately improve our interactions with the environment - that is definitely a list worth perusing. Even if your interest lies outside of SE Asia.

Guys,

Have a look at the Amazonia project film
The film produced by Stéphane Levin for Astrium GeoInformation Services documents the results obtained on the ground by Brazilian government agencies and NGOs in managing forests sustainably with the aid of satellite imagery.

These results confirm the impact and effectiveness of this technology in supporting the United Nations’ REDD initiative.

Maybe it's just me Fabrice but your recent links aren't coming through. Perhaps something with your HTML code butting up against the dashes in your TIG signature. Might want to check it out.

Important revelations such as these would not be possible without the use of GIS.

Last year's drought hit Amazon hard: nearly a million square miles impacted Mongabay, Mar. 29, 2011

[(03/29/2011) A new study on its way to being published shows that the Amazon rainforest suffered greatly from last year's drought. Employing satellite data and supercomputing technology, researchers have found that the Amazon was likely hit harder by last year's drought than a recent severe drought from 2005. The droughts have supported predictions by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) that climate change, among other impacts, could push portions of the Amazon to grasslands, devastating the world's greatest rainforest.]

GIS Mapping Specialists are the famous and specialist in the mapping and graphics image processing technology. They are simply known as GIS specialist that use a computer program to organize the geographic data to display the information.
